Overview

The internationally acclaimed star cellist Kian Soltani returns to Bern with a masterpiece of cello literature: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme.

Created at the suggestion of the German cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, he had originally requested a traditional cello concerto. Instead, Tchaikovsky created a set of variations on his own theme in the style of Mozart's time – so inspired that even Franz Liszt enthused: "This is music again, at last!" The rising star Uzbek conductor Aziz Shokhakimov will be conducting, whose interpretations captivate with their boundless energy and exceptional clarity. The evening begins with a symphonic sunrise by the unjustly forgotten Finnish composer Ida Moberg, a student of Jean Sibelius. The program concludes with Sibelius's Seventh Symphony: a moving musical legacy that seems like the essence of his entire oeuvre. Also featured is one of the composer's most famous works, the Valse triste , originally composed as part of an incidental score. Dutch composer and sound artist Cathy van Eck, who teaches in Bern, responds with a performative intervention—a contemporary exploration of the famous waltz.

Venue Info

Casino Bern - Bern
Location   Herrengasse 25 / Casinoplatz 1

One center for community, one point of contact, one concept: for the first time in the Casino’s history, the Burgergemeinde of Bern combine culture, culinary arts and events – and deliver “everything under one roof”. As the home of the Bern Symphony Orchestra and host to a variety of other concert events, the Casino Bern offers culture at its best.

Let yourself be moved, inspired and tempted in the newly renovated cultural venue – conveniently located in the center of Bern’s beautiful old town.

History meets modernity! The Burgergemeinde Bern and Director Ivo Adam have created the perfect place to come together – for the city, the region and beyond.

Since its opening in 1909, the Casino has been the cultural and social meeting place in the heart of Bern – and will remain so in the future. For over one hundred years it has radiated a unique atmosphere and grandeur; and the list of illustrious guests that has included Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly and Herbert von Karajan will continue to grow. For the first time the casino owner, the Burgergemeinde, has assumed management of the culinary offerings, under the direction of Ivo Adam. Another premiere: the Casino Bern is proud to be organizing its own in-house cultural events.

The Burgergemeinde raised around 78 million francs to restore the late baroque classicist building which was reopened in September 2019. Following the motto “Back to the Future”, the renovation took care to follow the original designs from 1909 as closely as possible.
