Programme
Johannes Brahms: Piano Concerto no. 2 in B flat major, Op.83
Béla Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra, Sz 116
Overview

Barenboim plays Brahms: With the conductor, peace ambassador, visionary and pianist, one of the most famous musicians of our time is coming to Bern. For this he chooses Brahms' mighty Concerto in B flat major, which miraculously reconciles the competing genres of concerto and symphony. Music as a means of understanding and liberation, this life message from the cosmopolitan Barenboim continues in the second half of this unique concert evening. Thomas Guggeis – once Barenboim's assistant, now, only in his mid-20s, a sensational conductor in Berlin and Stuttgart – devotes himself to the concerto for orchestraby Béla Bartók. This work is also a vision. Folkloric, concertante and virtuoso elements, classical and modern formal models unite here to form a total work of art that ranges from initially serious and elegiac sounds to a life-affirming statement in a lavish finale. This is a musical message that seems made for our time.
