Overview

The new ensemble with old instruments.

Haydn composed his Symphony No. 103 in 1795 during his second London tour for the "Opera Concerts" series. The premiere took place on March 2, 1795, at the King's Theatre in London. "The E-flat major Symphony (...) is Haydn's most radical attempt at interweaving a slow introduction and Allegro on multiple levels, and it is also the symphony in which folk music plays the most prominent role." (L. Finscher)

Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 forms a complete contrast to the "titanic" Symphonies Seven and Ninth that frame it. It sounds as if the composer, who had studied with Haydn, had once again gone back to the school of musical wit with 18th-century music. A quietly fading opening movement, an Allegretto scherzando instead of the slow movement, a minuet instead of the Scherzo introduced by Beethoven, and a rapidly fast finale continually surprise the listener.

Neither of these works are among the most frequently performed, but they show the composers at the peak of their careers and impressively demonstrate their special status as symphonists.
