Overview

Jiří Pokorný choreographs to the music of Rodion Shchedrin, who arranged Bizet's opera music into an evening-long dance piece for string orchestra and percussion. The choreographer also commissioned music from composer Davidson Jaconello, which lends the evening a contemporary musical dimension.

At the forefront of Jiří Pokorný's full-length dance evening is the familiar drama of love and jealousy. Yet Carmen is not only based on the story of its female protagonist; similar to Prosper Mérimée's literary source, it also focuses on Don José. Unable to accept his lover's free spirit, his love leads him down a path to emotional hell: jealousy, passion, and revenge determine his thoughts and actions. Carmen follows her own moral compass. It's not only Don José whom she antagonizes.

Synopsis

Carmen is actually a character from a book. This character became world-famous through an opera (also called Carmen). She is a fiercely independent woman who doesn't let anyone tell her what to do. This is difficult for the men around her. They want to possess her. But Carmen wants to be free. In the dance evening, the well-known music of the opera is played without singing. Instead, Carmen's story is presented through dancing: Don Jose is jealous and wants to kill Carmen because she danced with another man.
