Festival

HERBSTGOLD - Festival in Eisenstadt 2023

HERBSTGOLD - Festival in Eisenstadt from September 9th to 24th under the motto "Longing".

Programme
Overview

"The Death of a Poodle" - satirical song recital with music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Georges Bizet, Gustav Mahler, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and others.

Forget everything you think you know about evening song recitals - and not just because this programme is a matinee! Instead, get ready for a satirical rollercoaster ride through the backwaters of the classical music business and into the seemingly elitist but all-too-human realms where you've always wanted to peek. And now you can - if only to react with incredulous laughter. The mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager and the cabaret artist Alfred Dorfer, together with Julius Drake at the piano, go in search of the comedy in classical music, especially the unintentional variety. With songs from throughout music history - not least Ludwig van Beethoven's 'Elegy on the Death of a Poodle' - and ludicrous anecdotes from the dressing rooms of the world, Kirchschlager and Dorfer take the stilted, highbrow stuffiness out of classical music with entertaining, subtle humour. Ah, beloved poodle! 'You were as pure of all deceit and flaw/ as your frizzy silk fur was black;/ how many a man I knew whose soul/ was as black as your exterior.' What eye could remain dry?
