American tenor David Portillo, who is praised for his flawless voice and beautiful timbre, is emerging as one of the leading lyric tenors and seems poised for a successful career in opera and concerts on both sides of the Atlantic.

David Portillo is a graduate of the Ryan Opera Center, the Merola Opera Program, and the Wolf Trap Opera in Washington, D.C. He is also a student of Stephen King.

Mexican-American tenor David Portillo has performed leading roles on opera stages and in concert halls around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Washington National Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Santa Fe Opera, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, and the Opera Dallas. For the upcoming 2025/2026 season, Mr. Portillo returns to the Houston Grand Opera, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto, Japan. He will also make his debut roles at the Seattle Opera and the National Opera of the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

In 2024, Mr. Portillo received the Sphinx Medal of Excellence — an award given to artists who are leaders in the Latino and black communities for outstanding achievement in the arts. He is also nominated for a Grammy Award for recording John Corigliano's " Lord of the Screams "from the Opera Odyssey, in the role he created at the Santa Fe Opera.

In 2016-2017, David Portillo made his Australian debut as Ferrando in Kosi Phan Tutte with Opera Australia, conducted by Jonathan Darlington. In 2017-2018, he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in two roles: Eduardo in Thomas Ades' The Fighter Angel and Camille de Rosillon in The Merry Widow. Past seasons include performances at the Metropolitan, Chicago Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, Metropolitan Opera/Juilliard, Philadelphia Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, St. Petersburg Opera House, Champs-Elysees Theatre, Pittsburgh Opera, Arizona Opera, Palm OperaBeach, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan.
