About

A prize winner of several competitions including the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg, Finnish baritone Arttu Kataja graduated from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and became a member of the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin in 2006 performing such parts as Count/Le nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo/così fan tutte, Taddeo/L'italiana in Algeri, Papageno/Die Zauberflöte, Marcello/La Bohème, to name but a few.

Guest engagements have led him to the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki (Il viaggio a Reims, Le nozze di Figaro, Arabella, Così fan tutte, Andrea Chenier), Tampere Opera (Belcore/L’elisir d’amore, Sharpless/Madama Butterfly), the Savonlinna Opera Festival (Morales/Carmen, Marullo/Rigoletto, Papageno/Die Zauberflöte), Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile (Mr. Flint/Billy Budd, Belcore/L’elisir d’amore), Theatre du Capitole (Scherasmin/Oberon, Schaunard/La Bohéme), the Strassburg Festival, Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Figaro, Masetto, Guglielmo) and Japan, together with Daniel Barenboim and the Berliner Staatsoper. He also appeared in the production of "Orlando Paladino" under René Jacobs.

Mr. Kataja is active as a recitalist and concert singer. Recent concert highlights include J.S. Bach's "Magnificat" with DSO Berlin/Rinaldo Alessandrini, Händel's Messiah with Philharmonie Dresden/Michael Sanderling and Ein Deutsches Requiem with Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra/Leif Segerstam.

Arttu Kataja’s recordings include St. Matthew Passion (Jacobs/Harmonia Mundi, 2013), Wagner: Tristan und Isolde (Janowski/PentaTone, 2012), DVD of Orlando Paladino (Jacobs/Petersen/Randle, EuroArts 2010), DVD of Manon (Barenboim/Netrebko/Villazon, Deutsche Grammophon 2007), several programmes for the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE as well as CDs of Fredrick Pacius, Die Loreley (Sinfonia Lahti, Osmo Vänskä); Aulis Sallinen, Kuningas lähtee Ranskaan (The King goes forth to France), and Armas Launis, Aslak Hetta (Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo).
