About

Valentin Uryupin, the winner of the 8th Sir Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition in 2017, is an exceptional musician for two reasons: before he celebrated successes as a conductor, he won more than 20 international competitions as a clarinettist, performing worldwide. In light of his many conducting commissions – both in the symphonic and the operatic fields – his solo career has increasingly been taking a back seat; however, Valentin Uryupin can occasionally be experienced in play-conduct concerts in both roles, as a conductor and clarinettist.

Since 2011 Valentin Uryupin has been a regular conductor of the MusicAeterna orchestra at the opera house in Perm, which was founded by Teodor Currentzis in 2004 and has been thrilling audiences at many international guest performances. As principal conductor and artistic conductor he has led the symphonic orchestra of Rostov-von-Don since 2015. He regularly conducts concerts for the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Minsk. In addition he has worked as a guest conductor at the Teatro Real in Madrid and the opera in Athens, with the SWR Symphonieorchester, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Dublin, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra in Bucharest, at the Mariinski Theatre in Saint Petersburg and with the Russian National Orchestra and the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra.

In the 2018/19 season he had his debut at the Radio-Symphonieorchester in Vienna and at the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin. Further guest appearances included the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, the Teatro Massimo Palermo and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. He can be heard at the Brucknerhaus Linz among other venues with his Rostov Symphony Orchestra. After he was enthusiastically celebrated at five concerts in China with the State Academic Orchestra Evgeny Svetlanov last season he will now conduct the acclaimed orchestra on its tour through Great Britain.

Valentin Uryupin’s repertoire encompasses more than 30 major operas and ballets as well as a broad spectrum of orchestral music, including many contemporary works by composers such as John Adams, Gija Kantscheli, Henri Dutilleux, Jörg Widmann and Kusma Bodrow.

Valentin Uryupin completed his training for both of his crafts – the clarinet (2009) and conducting (2012) at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. His teachers include Gennadi Roschdestwenski and the clarinettist Evgeny Petrov; he has also assisted Valery Gergiev and Vladimir Jurowski.
