The Dresden Opera Choir was founded on October 8, 1817 by royal decree by Friedrich August Dem Gerechten. The adoption of this decree was above all a merit of Carl Maria von Weber. In 1817, as a newly engaged Hofkapellmeister, he was commissioned to create a German opera company in addition to the traditional Italian opera in Dresden. Weber called for the establishment of a "standing Theatre choir", which would meet the increased demands of the opera repertoire to be created for this purpose.
As a result, the Saxon State Opera Choir developed into a first-class and sought-after sound body thanks to outstanding personalities who guided it with artistic care and tradition. Over the centuries, Joseph Metzner, Wilhelm Fischer, Karl Maria Pembaur, Ernst Hintze, Gerhart Wüstner, Hans Peter Müller-Sybel, Hans-Dieter Pflüger and Matthias Brauer, among others, have developed and maintained a special sound ideal belonging to this State Opera Choir, which was especially influenced by the choir's active Concert Activities. Homogeneity of the sound, the sound nobility, cultured piano, vocal density, while the Sound and volume are key attributes that stand for the Saxon state Opera choir.
Since the 2014/15 season, Jörn Hinnerk Andresen has been the choir director.
Today, the Saxon State Opera Choir is regarded as one of the best opera choirs in Europe. His appearances in Opera performances, his participation in concerts, radio, television and CD productions, the play continued presence at the festival and on tours brought him worldwide attention and the highest appreciation.
The work with the conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli, who considered the artistic Potential to be far from exhausted, was particularly important for the State Opera Choir. In numerous CD Productions, the choir ensemble continued to grow beyond itself. In the years after Sinopolis's sudden death, continuous work consolidated the artistic quality.
As in all artistic divisions of the Saxon State Opera Dresden, the close linkage of Tradition, current artistic responsibility and focus on the challenges of the future plays a decisive role in the State Opera Choir.
Since 2013, the Saxon state Opera chorus, together with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, a permanent guest at the Easter festival in Salzburg, whose artistic direction is in the hands of Christian Thielemann.
On October 8, 2017, the Saxon State Opera Choir Dresden celebrated its 200th anniversary.
