Overview

The Stanislavsky Theatre, located in XIX century historical building just 750 metres (9-minute walk) from the Bolshoi, offers audiences the unique opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable evening of music and drama awaits — Cherubini’s “Medea” in Moscow. Many of the Theatre’s artists have graced the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre and trained at the same prestigious academies that formed Russia’s greatest opera talents. Their presence guarantees that Medea resonates with both dramatic authenticity and musical excellence, carrying forward the legacy of one of opera’s most iconic roles. Opera at the Stanislavsky Theatre is the great and affordable alternative to the Bolshoi.

Luigi Cherubini’s Medea is one of the great masterpieces of French opera at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Cherubini, a founder of the Paris Conservatoire and a composer whom Beethoven himself called the greatest of his contemporaries, witnessed and chronicled the French Revolution. In Medea, he created a work of operatic scale equal to the ancient Greek myth that inspired it. Recognized as one of the most powerful tragedies in the operatic repertoire, Medea demands not only extraordinary vocal skill but also exceptional dramatic artistry.

The opera experienced a renaissance in the mid-20th century thanks to Maria Callas, whose legendary portrayal of Medea set an enduring benchmark for the role. Ever since, sopranos approaching this part have been expected to deliver a rare combination of vocal brilliance and dramatic intensity.

It is precisely for this reason that the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre turned to Cherubini’s masterpiece. The company boasts two remarkable singers capable of embodying Medea’s grandeur and passion: the world-renowned soprano Hibla Gerzmava and one of Moscow’s brightest operatic stars, Natalia Muradymova.

The production is performed in the Italian translation by Carlo Zangarini, with recitatives by Franz Lachner, honoring the performance tradition that has kept Cherubini’s work alive on the international stage.

Synopsis

Place: Corinth
Time: Antiquity

Act 1
Outside the palace of King Créon

Dircé is preparing for her wedding to Jason. Years ago, Jason had stolen the golden fleece with the help of Médée, who had betrayed her family and established a relationship with Jason, the result of which was two children. Although Jason has since abandoned Médée, she reappears and demands that he return to her. Jason refuses and Médée curses him, swearing vengeance.

Act 2
Inside the palace

In despair, Médée is encouraged by her slave, Néris, to leave the city. Créon then appears and orders that Médée leave. She asks for one more day with her children and, after the king agrees, she appears to be calmer and gives Néris two wedding presents to take to her rival.

Act 3
Between the palace and the temple

Néris brings the two children out to where Médée is waiting. Sounds of lamentation are heard from within the palace and it is discovered that one of Médée's wedding presents has poisoned Dircé. An angry crowd gathers and Néris, Médée, and the children take refuge in the temple. From the temple, the two women reappear with Médée grasping a blood-stained knife with which she has killed her two children. Médée curses Jason and disappears into the air. The temple goes up in flames and the crowd flees in terror.

The Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre is a music theatre in Moscow.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre was founded in 1941 when two companies directed by the legendary reformers of twentieth-century theatre — Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko — merged: the Stanislavsky Opera Theatre (established at the end of 1918 as an Opera Studio of the Bolshoi Theatre) and the Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre (set up in 1919 as a Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre).

The new theatre followed the artistic principles of its founders, who applied the system of the Moscow Art Theatre to opera and ballet. Both Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko rejected the current conception of opera as "costume concert". They wanted to bring it closer to drama and comedy, revealing the main idea of the plot through psychologically motivated action. The ballet company entered the Theatre as a part of Nemirovich-Danchenko's troupe. It was the former company of the Moscow Art Ballet, established in 1929 by Victorina Krieger, the valued ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre. She was Artistic Director and one of the principal dancers of the Moscow Art Ballet. Soon after Stanislavsky's death, Nemirovich-Danchenko took charge of all the companies (Vsevolod Meyerhold invited by Stanislavsky to work for his theatre, was arrested in 1939, and no other stage director could prove equal to Nemirovich-Danchenko). Then the theatre was given its present name.
