About

The Austrian mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert began her vocal training with her mother, the soprano and vocal teacher Sigrid Rennert. In 2014 she completed her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Prof. Karlheinz Hanser and Prof. Charles Spencer with distinction. She attended master classes with Brigitte Fassbaender, Ann Murray, Helmut Deutsch and others.

Sophie Rennert is the winner of the 2nd prize and the audience prize of the 7th International Cesti Competition for Baroque Singing in Innsbruck in 2016, and she is also the winner of the Salzburg International Mozart Competition in 2014. 2013 she was awarded the prize of the Professor Armin Weltner Foundation and the Friends of the Aix-en-Provence Festival. In 2012 she won first prize at Musica Juventutis and could therefore be heard with a song program at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

She has worked with renowned conductors and orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic under Philippe Jordan, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg under Ádám Fischer, Ivor Bolton (Salzburg Festival 2013), Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla (Mozart: “Idomeneo” 2016), Laurence Cummings (Handel: “Lotario” 2017) and Mark Piollet (Mahler: “Rückert Songs” 2018), Hartmut Hähnchen (Parsifal, Bayreuth 2017) and Semyon Bychkov (Parsifal, Bayreuth 2018), with Camerata Salzburg and the Bruckner Orchester Linz.with the Camerata Salzburg, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra.

The young mezzo-soprano has also established herself within the elite of today’s Lied singers. In 2014 her CD “Von den Göttern weiß ich nichts” was released with contemporary vocal works by Uli Rennert. She also performs regularly at the Schubertiade, the Vienna Musikverein and the Vienna Konzerthaus, where she was also selected for the “Great Talents” series in 2017/18. Further recitals took her to Wigmore Hall, the Belfast International Festival, the Festwochen der Alten Musik Innsbruck, the Musikverein Graz, the Ruhr Piano Festival and Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

In 2013 Sophie Rennert was a member of the “Young Singers Project” at the Salzburg Festival. From 2014 to 2016 she was a member of the ensemble of Konzert Theater Bern.

Sophie Rennert’s opera repertoire ranges from Baroque (e.g. Purcell: “Dido and Aeneas”, Handel: “Susanna”), Mozart (Cherubino, Dorabella, Sesto), and operetta (Prince Orlofsky) to contemporary works (Wife/Mark-Anthony Turnage: “Greek”).

Recently Sophie Rennert had great success as Idamante (“Idomeneo”) at the Salzburg Landestheater, in the title role of Handel’s “Lotario” at the Göttingen Handel Festival, as Andronico in Vivaldi’s “Tamerlano” with the ensemble Les Accents in Dortmund, as Licida in Vivaldi’s “L’Olimpiade” in Warsaw, as Piacere in Haendel’s “Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno” with the Accademia Bizantina in Gdansk, as Angelina in Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” in Mannheim, as Giacinta in Mozart’s “La Finta Semplice” at the Classical Opera in Birmingham and London under Ian Page’s baton, as well as in the role of  a flower girl in Wagner’s “Parsifal” at the Bayreuth Festival 2017 and 2018.

Future highlights include the  revival of “La Cenerentola” at the Nationaltheater Mannheim , “Lotario” in Bern, and recitals at the Schubertiade, the Festival of Early Music in Innsbruck, at the Konzerthaus Wien   and a re-invitation to Wigmore Hall.
