About

Sally Matthews was the winner of the 1999 Kathleen Ferrier Award. She studied with Cynthia Jolly and Johanna Peters and completed the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2000. She was a member of The Royal Opera, Covent Garden Young Artists Programme from 2001 to 2003 and was part of the BBC New Generation Artists. She currently studies with Paul Farringdon. 

In 2001 Sally made her Royal Opera debut as Nannetta Falstaff with Bernard Haitink. Since then, roles at Covent Garden have included Pamina Die Zauberflöte; Fiordiligi Così fan tutte; Sifare Mitridate; Anne Truelove The Rake’s Progress and Blanche in Poulenc Les Dialogues des Carmélites. 

Plans this season and beyond include Blanche Les Dialogues des Carmélites and Donna Anna Don Giovanni for Dutch National Opera; title role in Janacek Jenufa with Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich; Strauss Madeleine Capriccio at La Monnaie, Brussels; Delius Five Songs from the Norwegian with the Netherlands Philharmonic; Bruckner Te Deum with the NTR Radio Philharmonic and Bernard Haitink; Mahler Symphony No 4 and Berg Seven Early Songs with the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Robin Ticciati; the Berg also with the BRSO, Munich; Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Schumann Das Paradies und die Peri with the Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle. Sally will also return in future seasons to the Royal Opera Covent Garden and make her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York and Salzburg Festival in Thomas Adès The Exterminating Angel. 

Recent concerts include Mahler Symphony No 8 with the Philharmonia and Maazel; Mendelssohn Elijah with the Müncher Philharmoniker; Lobgesang with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra; Beethoven Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph ll with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Michael Tilson-Thomas; Ellen Orford in Britten Peter Grimes and Poulenc Gloria in Rome with Antonio Pappano; Brahms Requiem with Haitink and Carmina Burana, Mahler Symphony No 4 and Schumann Paradies und die Peri with the Berlin Philharmonic. Regular appearances with the LSO have included Mahler Symphonies No 2 and 4; Strauss Vier letzte Lieder; Szymanowski Stabat Mater; Paradies und die Peri; Brahms Requiem; Messiaen Poèmes pour Mi and Haydn Creation with conductors Sir Colin Davis, Michael Tilson Thomas, Valery Gergiev and Daniel Harding. Sally has also sung Creation with the OAE and Sir Mark Elder and The Seasons at the BBC Proms with Sir Roger Norrington. 

Sally appears regularly at Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich (Cavalli La Calisto, title role Unsuk Chin Alice in Wonderland, Blanche and Fiordiligi); Dutch National Opera (Fiordiligi, Sophie Der Rosenkavalier and the title role in Handel Deidamia) Theater an der Wien (Governess The Turn of the Screw and Blanche) and La Monnaie (Jenufa, Daphne and Anne Truelove). She made her Vienna Staatsoper debut as Donna Anna Don Giovanni and recently has sung Konstanze Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Countess Le nozze di Figaro for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. 

Sally has given recitals with Simon Lepper at La Monnaie, Brussels, the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and Wigmore Hall, where she has also appeared with the Nash Ensemble.
