Russell Thomas is an American operatic tenor. He has performed leading roles in leading opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, English National Opera, Berlin State Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
Thomas was born in Miami, Florida, and was unaware of his talent until he was 18, when a vocal teacher suggested that he pursue a career in singing. He went on to study music at the Conservatory and sang in the Miami Opera Chorus as a student. Thomas joined the Seattle Opera, the Florida Grand Opera, the St. Louis Opera House, and the Sarasota Opera for young artists. He then joined the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development program.
Thomas performs tenor roles in the world's leading opera houses, primarily Giuseppe Verdi's characters, as well as other lyrical and dramatic roles.
He has performed in Verdi's I Mazzagneri at the Washington Concert Opera, at the Berlin State Opera in the title role in Verdi's Don Carlos, as Andres in Vozzeck at the Metropolitan Opera, as the title role in Hoffmann's Tales at the Seattle Opera, and as the Prince in The Mermaid at the Metropolitan Opera. He also performed the role of Tito in Mozart's The Mercy of Titus at the Metropolitan Opera, and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the role of Gabriele Adorno in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra.
