About

With more than 260 recordings, and an intense career as a singer, conductor, researcher, and teacher, René Jacobs has achieved an outstanding Position in the field of Baroque and classical vocal music. He received his early musical education as a singer Boy in the Cathedral of his native Ghent. During his studies in classical philology, he remained active as a singer. His encounters with Alfred Deller, Gustav Leonhardt and the Kuijken brothers determined his focus on baroque music and his specialisation as a Countertenor, in which he quickly acquired a reputation as one of the most prominent singers of his time. In 1977 he founded the Ensemble "Concerto Vocale", explored vocal chamber music and the opera repertoire of the 17th century and made a series of impressive recordings, many of them Award-winning world premieres.  René Jacobs made his debut as an opera conductor in 1983 with Antonio Cestis "Orontea" at the Innsbruck festival of old music, where he worked from 1996 to 2009 as artistic director. His long and successful collaboration with the Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden (since 1992), the Theater an der Wien (since 2006), the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie Brussels and with other international stages in Europe, the USA and Asia has continuously enriched his Repertoire, from early Baroque to Rossini and from the most unknown to the most famous titles. His work as a conductor is characteristic of his pioneering spirit, his thorough study of historical sources often led to fresh and daring interpretations of the standard repertoire. Examples of this are his internationally renowned Mozart opera recordings, which are distinguished by their unique combination of Science and musical instinct. His recording of "Le nozze di Figaro" was awarded a Grammy Award, the magazine "Gramophone" (UK), wrote in an article: "The Mozart Opera series by René Jacobs is one of the recorded marvels of our time."In addition to this extensive opera activity, spiritual music and the oratory play a very important role in his career. His recording of the requiem of Mozart / Süßmayr / Dutron has already received a great press echo. New CD releases are Beethoven's " Leonore "(version 1805) and his" Missa solemnis " and Schubert's symphonies No. 2 and No. 4.
