After graduating from the Munich Fashion School, Petra Reinhardt trained with Vera Marzot, the costume designer of Luchino Visconti. She works as an assistant at the Staatsoper Hamburg, the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Staatstheater Stuttgart, the Opera Rhine (Strasbourg), the Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon, the San Carlo in Naples, on the stages of Frankfurt, Bonn, Augsburg. She also works for film, television and theater as an actress. In 1990 and 1991, she designed the costumes of Secret Wedding, Pollicino de Henze and Barber of Seville in Munich.
In 1998, she collaborated with Peter Pabst for the costumes of the film Mario und der Zauberer after Thomas Mann, directed by Klaus Maria Brandauer. In 2005, she created Werther's costumes at the Staatsoper Vienna (directed by Andrei Serban). She worked again with Klaus Maria Brandauer in 2006 for Bertolt Brecht's The Three-Quarter Opera and Kurt Weill in Berlin and Wagner's Lohengrin in Cologne, then with William Friedkin (Richard Strauss' Salomé and Wolfgang Rihm's Das Gehege on Bayerische Staatsoper of Munich), José Cura (The commedia è finita of Leoncavallo in Fiume and A masked ball in Cologne), Johannes Schaaf (The bat in Amsterdam, Tosca in Dresden, Marie Victory of Respighi in the Deutsche Oper of Berlin), Chen Shi-Zheng (Farewell my concubine in Beijing and Nixon in China by John Adams at the Théâtre du Châtelet), Jasmin Solfaghari (A Night in Venice, Dresden) and Robert Carsen (The Magic Flute at the Baden-Baden Festival and Opera National Theater of Paris, the world premiere of CO² by Giorgio Battistelli at La Scala in Milan, The Venetian Festivities of Campra at the Capitoline Theater in Toulouse, Don Carlo at the Opéra National du Rhin, L'Orfeo at the Opéra de Lausanne, The Beggar's Ope ra at Bouffes du Nord, Idomeneo at the Teatro Real de Madrid).
