About

The vocal and instrumental ensemble Les Arts Florissants is one of the most renowned and respected early music groups in the world.

The vocal and instrumental ensemble Les Arts Florissants was founded in 1979 by William Christie and is named after an opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Since their triumph with Lullys Atys at the Opéra Comique in 1987, Les Arts Florissants have enjoyed the greatest success in opera and concerts worldwide. The ensemble is pioneering the rediscovery of works from the 17th and 18th centuries, some of which are still unpublished. Under William Christie and Paul Agnew, Les Arts Florissants gives around 100 performances annually in France and at the best opera houses and concert halls in Europe and overseas, be it in (semi) scenic productions or in chamber music ensembles.

The ensemble has been residing in the Paris Philharmonic since 2015, but there is also a close relationship above all with the French region of Vendée, south-west of Paris, which has become the center of the ensemble's activities, and where, since 2012, that of William Christie launched Dans les Jardins Festival. In addition, Les Arts Florissants are actively involved in promoting young musicians. In 2002, in cooperation with the Juilliard School, William Christie founded Le Jardin des Voix, a center for the promotion of young voices, and Arts Flo Juniors for the promotion of young instrumentalists. In the meantime they have found a home in Thiré.

In order to make the extensive repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries accessible to everyone, the ensemble has recorded and produced countless CD and DVD recordings (now there are more than 100), many in cooperation with the label harmonia mundi. In the Theater an der Wien, Les Arts Florissants were last heard in Rameau's Platée .
