Istvan Vardai, a 28-year-old Hungarian cellist, has been awarded several prestigious international prizes: in 2008 he won the 63rd Geneva International Music Competition and also received additional special prizes: the Audience Prize, the Pierre Fournier Prize, and the Coup de Coeur Breguet Prize. In 2007 he won third place at the Tchaikovsky International Music Competition in Moscow. In 2006 he was awarded the special prize at the Emanuel Feuermann Cello Competition at the Kronberg Academy and won first prize at the 13th International Brahms Competition in Austria. He is a three-time winner of the David Popper International Music Competition in 2000, 2003 and 2004.

Istvan Vardai (born November 12, 1985 in Pécs) is a Hungarian cellist.

Since 1997 he studied under the guidance of László Mező at the school for gifted children at the Budapest Franz Liszt Academy of Music, and has been taking the basic course there since 2004. He has participated in master classes by Natalia Gutman, Natalia Shakhovskaya, Janos Starker and others. He is a participant and laureate of many international competitions, including the third prize winner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow, 2007) and the first prize winner and a number of special prizes at the International Performers Competition in Geneva (2008).
