Festival

Immling Festival 2023

The festival on the Gutshof near Halfing is a must, especially for opera lovers. Since the first event by Ludwig Baumann, the riding hall has now been converted into an air-conditioned festival hall with the most comfortable seating. The ensemble consists of international singers with several own opera productions. The events, which now have cult status, range from studio concerts to youth operas.

Overview

María de Buenos Aires was composed by Astor Piazzolla in 1968. It was his first and remained his only opera: a declaration of love for the tango and also for Buenos Aires, his hometown. More of a musical mood painting than a scenic spectacle: intimate, intense, quiet and touching.

Summoned by a ghost, the lost voice of María appears in person through a crack in the asphalt: "I am María... María Tango, María of the suburbs, María night, María fatale passion, María of the love of Buenos Aires am I!"

She roams through the suburbs in the direction of Buenos Aires, unsteady, as if in a frenzy: when she finally arrives in the Argentine city, María can be herself: she chats, recalls her childhood, relaxed and liberated.

Guided by the sounds of tango music, she lands in the underworld between "whore mothers and thieves": There she is murdered, her identity and her memories extinguished.

María now walks more than shadows through the night...

History
Premiere of this production: 08 May 1968, Sala Planeta, Buenos Aires

María de Buenos Aires is a tango opera (tango operita) with music by Ástor Piazzolla and libretto by Horacio Ferrer that premiered at the Sala Planeta in Buenos Aires on 8 May 1968. The first part of the surreal plot centers on the experiences of a prostitute in Buenos Aires, Argentina; the second part takes place after her death.

Synopsis

The ill-omened María, born "one day when God was drunk" in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, heads to the center of Buenos Aires, where she is seduced by the music of the tango and becomes a sex worker. Thieves and brothel keepers, gathered at a black mass, resolve her death. After her death, she is condemned to a hell, which is the city itself; her Shadow now walks the city. She has returned to virginity, is impregnated by the word of the goblin poet, and—witnessed by three Construction Workers (Magi) and The Women Who Knead Pasta—gives birth to a Child María, who may be herself.
