About

Hubert Kowalczyk is a Polish bass opera singer, acclaimed for his powerful and resonant voice. Born in 1995, he began his musical education at the Oskar Kolberg Music School in Radom, Poland, studying piano from the age of six. He later pursued vocal training under Grzegorz Pazik. In 2014, Kowalczyk enrolled at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, where he studied under Prof. Martin Bruns and Prof. Dr. Michail Lanskoi. During the 2017/2018 academic year, he expanded his studies at the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali "Pietro Mascagni" in Livorno, Italy, under Maestro Graziano Polidori

While still a student, Kowalczyk gained practical experience by performing roles such as Claudio in Handel's "Agrippina," Antonio in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," and Zaretsky in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." In January 2016, he made his debut at the Neuköllner Oper in Berlin, portraying Ubalde and Artémidore in an adaptation of Gluck's "Armide." From 2016 to 2017, he was a member of the Opera Academy at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw, where he worked under the guidance of Eytan Pessen and Olga Pasichnyk. During this time, he debuted on the chamber stage as Świstos in Stefani's "A Supposed Miracle, or Cracovians and Highlanders" and as Sarastro in an adaptation of Mozart's "The Magic Flute."In the 2019/2020 season, Kowalczyk joined the International Opera Studio at the Hamburg State Opera, performing roles such as Montano in "Otello," Alcindoro in "La Bohème," and Dottore Grenvil in "La Traviata." His talent and dedication led to his promotion to the main ensemble in 2021. At the Hamburg State Opera, he expanded his repertoire with roles including Bartolo in "Le nozze di Figaro," Colline in "La Bohème," Crespel in "Les contes d’Hoffmann," and Oroveso in "Norma." His performances have been conducted by esteemed maestros such as Kent Nagano and Daniele Callegari.Kowalczyk's career also includes notable guest engagements. He made his house and role debut as Zuniga in "Carmen" at the Staatsoper Berlin under the baton of Bertrand de Billy. He portrayed Nourabad in Bizet's "Les pêcheurs de perles" at the Opernhaus Zürich and took on the role of Haly in Rossini's "L’italiana in Algeri" at the Bregenzer Festspiele. Additionally, he performed as Collatinus in a concert version of Britten's "The Rape of Lucretia" with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, conducted by Robin Ticciati. The 2024/2025 season marks significant milestones in Kowalczyk's career. He is set to make his Wagnerian debut as Fasolt in "Das Rheingold" at Theater Basel, in a production directed by Benedikt von Peter and conducted by Jonathan Nott. He will also return to the Opernhaus Zürich to perform as Truffaldin in a new production of "Ariadne auf Naxos," directed by Andreas Homoki and conducted by Markus Poschner. Furthermore, he is scheduled to debut in roles such as Sarastro in "Die Zauberflöte," Ferrando in "Il trovatore," and Sparafucile in "Rigoletto."
