About

Gidon Markusovich Kremer (Latvian: Gidons Krēmers, born February 27, 1947, Riga) is a Soviet, Latvian, and later German violinist and conductor, founder of the chamber orchestra "Kremerata Baltica" (1997), and author of several books. Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation (1995).

Gidon Kremer is one of the most striking and extraordinary personalities in the contemporary music world. A native of Riga, he began studying music at the age of four with his father and grandfather, who were both outstanding violinists. At the age of seven, he entered the Riga School of Music. At the age of 16, he won first prize at the Latvian National Competition and two years later began studying with David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory. He won many awards at prestigious international competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1967 and first prizes at the Paganini Competition (1969) and the Tchaikovsky Competition (1970). These successes launched Gidon Kremer’s distinguished career, during which he has earned worldwide recognition and a reputation as one of the most original and creatively compelling artists of his generation. He has performed on virtually all the world's best concert stages with the most famous orchestras in Europe and America, and collaborated with the most outstanding conductors of our time. Gidon Kremer's repertoire is extraordinarily broad, covering the entire traditional palette of classical and romantic violin music as well as music of the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by such masters as Henze, Berg and Stockhausen. He also promotes the works of living Russian and Eastern European composers and presents many new works, some of which are dedicated to Kremer. He has collaborated with such diverse composers as Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Giya Kancheli, Sofia Gubaidulina, Valentin Silvestrov, Luigi Nono, Aribert Reimann, Péteris Vasks, John Adams and Astor Piazzolla, presenting their music to the public with respect for tradition and at the same time with a sense of the present day. It would be fair to say that there is no other soloist in the world of the same level and the highest world status who has done so much for contemporary composers over the past 30 years.
