Festival

Sounds of the Dolomites 2019

The mountains take center stage in one of the most charming music festivals of Trentino. Sounds of the Dolomites, now at its 25 edition, takes place from June 28 to September 15. International musicians and artists will perform in the outdoors, near huts, refuges, forts and beautiful locations which can be reached on foot along well-marked paths, with shows starting at dawn and ending late at night.

The love for music and for the mountains, for art and nature, all in one festival!

A series of important events with famous Italian and international artists will follow.

Programme
Overview

Take to the footpaths with two exceptional charismatic and passionate musicians

Giovanni Sollima is a versatile artist. He has made appearances on stages across the world, performing with top musicians, orchestras, artists and writers, and has composed and played for cinema, theatre, television and dance. He has been a guest of Sounds of the Dolomites before, but this time he will embark with his cello on what is probably the Festival’s most complete experience with three days of mountains and music. By his side will be Avi Avital, the first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a Grammy Award, whose innovative force and charisma are matched by few of the greats. It is largely due to him that the 21st century is again producing music for the mandolin - over a hundred contemporary compositions have been written for him - and the public have found renewed enthusiasm for this long-neglected instrument.

Venue Info

Catinaccio and Sassolungo - Val di Fassa
Location   Italy

The Sassolungo Group is situated between the Val Gardena and Val di Fassa valleys, the Sella Group and Mt. Catinaccio.

This mountain range in the western Dolomites, also known as Langkofel Group, is allocated in a circular arc, opened towards north west. Due to this allocation, it forms kind of an “inner yard”. It originated about 230 million years ago - famous in this area is the “Città dei Sassi” (City of Stones) at the foot of the Sassolungo Group, which is characterised by a rich flora and fauna.

The Sassolungo Group consists of the following peaks - in clockwise direction: Mt. Sassolungo (3,181 m a.s.l.), Mt. Spallone del Sassolungo (south-eastern peak of the Sassolungo), the Punta delle Cinque Dita (2,996 m a.s.l.), the Punta Grohmann (or Sasso di Levante, 3,126 m a.s.l.), the Innerkofler Pinnacle (3,081 m a.s.l.), Mt. Dente and Mt. Sasso Piatto (2,969 m a.s.l.). Particularly the Sassolungo and the Sasso Piatto mountains are perfect for climbing and moutain tours and can also be surrounded on foot. The highest peak (and name giving) is the Sassolungo or Langkofel.

Worthwhile is the hike across the Sassolungo Group, starting from the Rif. Passo Sella mountain hut and passing by the Sassolungo Saddle, the Rif. Vicenza and Murmeltierhütte mountain huts and the Jender Valley, until reaching Santa Cristina in the Val Gardena valley. This hike is quite exhausting despite a low altitude difference.
