Overview

Composed in 1951, György Ligeti's Concert Românesc blends folk dances, nostalgia, and understated modernity. Deemed too dissonant under the Stalinist regime, it was censored and not performed until 1971. This rejection marked the beginning of a long artistic exile for Ligeti, who was soon recognized as a major figure of the 20th century. In contrast, Max Bruch enjoyed success from his youth. His lyrical and romantic First Violin Concerto (1868) became a staple of the repertoire, which was performed at this concert by violin prodigy Daniel Lozakovich. In contrast, Schubert's 4th Symphony, known as the "Tragic Symphony," expresses the frustrations of a 19-year-old man prevented from emancipating himself. Composed in 1816, it would not be performed until 21 years after his death.
