Auditorium della Stella (Spoleto, Italy)
Auditorium della Stella
Auditorium della Stella is a theatre in Spoleto located on Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi. Auditorium della Stella is situated nearby to Teatro lirico sperimentale A. Belli, and close to Piazza Don Pino Puglisi.
The church of Santi Stefano e Tommaso, commonly called Santa Maria della Stella, has recently been used as an auditorium and as a venue for important cultural events in Spoleto. Built between 1786 and 1793 on a project by Battista Dotti, it represents one of the best examples of the neoclassical architecture of the late eighteenth century.
The interior is characterized by a large luminous hall that directs interest towards the presbytery and the curvilinear apse, with a singular scenographic effect. The same refinement of taste is found in the rich stucco decoration, the only one still in place, given that the precious marble altars of the niches and some eighteenth-century paintings that embellished the environment have been moved to other locations.
