About

British tenor Andrew Staples made his Royal Opera debut in the 2006/7 Season as Jaquino (Fidelio). He has subsequently sung First Man in Armour and Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Artabanes (Artaxerxes), Narraboth (Salome) and Flamand (Capriccio in concert) for the Company. In the 2018/19 Season he sings Froh (Das Rheingold) and Tichon Kabanov (Kát’a Kabanová) for The Royal Opera.

Staples was a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral, and a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. He went on to further singing studies at the Royal College of Music. Along with his Royal Opera appearances, he has performed in opera for Prague’s National Theatre, La Monnaie, Brussels, Theater an der Wien, Hamburg State Opera, Lucerne Festival, Salzburg Festival (where he has sung Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni) and for Lyric Opera of Chicago (where he has sung Tamino). He has also sung leading roles in concert performances of operas, including Faust (La Damnation de Faust), Fenton (Falstaff), Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw) and Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress).

A prolific concert artist, Staples has appeared with orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, working with conductors including Rattle, Nézet-Séguin, Harding, Bychkov, Manze and Ticciati. He is also active as an opera director.
