Grafenegg Music Festival 2026

The Grafenegg Music Festival 2026 celebrates its 20th anniversary with a season of extraordinary artistic excellence, transforming the magnificent grounds of Grafenegg Castle into one of Europe’s most captivating destinations for classical music. From 14 August to 6 September 2026, audiences are invited to experience world-class performances beneath open summer skies, surrounded by historic gardens, elegant architecture, and the unique atmosphere of Lower Austria’s cultural landscape.

Programme
Antonín Dvořák: Cello Concerto in B minor, Op.104
Anton Bruckner: Symphony no. 6 in A major, WAB 106
Overview

For Rudolf Buchbinder, Antonin Dvořak’s B minor Cello Concerto is simply "the perfect concerto".

Who could disagree with him? Julia Hagen, a former master student of Heinrich Schiff who has since risen to the top of her profession, immediately goes into raptures as well: "It is perhaps the most beautiful cello concerto". On this evening, Dvořak’s melodic richness finds a monumental counterpart in Anton Bruckner’s Sixth Symphony with the European Union Youth Orchestra under the direction of Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno. However, Bruckner’s great works contain lyrical sections that are always widely sung: No one wrote more beautiful adagios than Bruckner in his late symphonies, to which the Sixth may justifiably be counted. Together with the Fifth and Seventh, it is the only completed of his symphonies that its creator never revised.

Venue Info

Wolkenturm - Grafenegg
Location   Grafenegg 10

The award-winning open air stage is characterized by its imaginative design of concrete, steel and glass.

With the Wolkenturm, Grafenegg’s centuries-old architectural landscape in 2007 gained an open-air stage that blended perfectly into its natural surroundings. Nestling in a natural hollow, the building designed by architects Marie-Therese Harnoncourt and Ernst J. Fuchs (the next ENTERprise – architects) is a sculpture that rises up a good 15 metres to the height of the treetops and affords unexpected views from a range of standpoints. From the terraces, with seating for over 1,700 spectators, as well as from the surrounding hills that provide lawn seating for over 400 people, one’s eye is caught by the historical castle and the romantic ambience of Grafenegg. The open-air arena’s acoustic shell produces an excellent sound through the acoustic detailing of the Munich firm Müller-BBM.

In case of bad weather, concerts at the Wolkenturm are moved to the Auditorium. For ticket holders in categories 1 to 5, alternative seating is available in the Auditorium, and for category 6, standing room with a seating rail. For ticket holders in category 7 and lawn seating, a live video transmission of the concert can be viewed at the Reitschule.
