Overview

With their 1956 broadway musical „My Fair Lady“ Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's melodies „The Rain in Spain“ or „I could have danced all night“ went round the world. The story tells of phonetician Henry Higgins who turns penniless flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a society lady. The professor stubbornly resists falling in love with his „creation“.

My Fair Lady is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady. The original Broadway and London shows starred Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews.

Synopsis

Act I
The flower girl Eliza is going about her business at the fruit and vegetable market in Covent Garden. Henry Higgins, professor of phonetics, notices Eliza’s original dialect phrases. The street traders standing around warn Eliza, because they take Higgins for a policeman, but he demonstrates his linguistic skills by analysing Colonel Pickering’s accent and telling him exactly where he comes from. The two men introduce themselves to each other – Pickering was on his way to see Higgins anyway. Eliza receives a generous gift of money from him and dreams of a better life Eliza’s scoundrel father, old Mr. Doolittle, waylays Eliza and succeeds in relieving her of a few shillings. Then he carries on drinking …

Eliza comes to Higgins’ language studio and wants to learn how to speak properly so that she can become a lady and open a flower shop. Higgins bets with Pickering that in six months he can make a lady of her.

Old Mr. Doolittle learns of the new company Eliza is keeping and hopes to gain financial advantage from this. He calls on Higgins. Doolittle’s crude attempt at blackmail ends with the payment of five pounds to the old drunkard in return for his daughter. Higgins makes Eliza practise endless elocution exercises, which she finds extraordinarily difficult. Eventually, though, they make great progress and Higgins decides to run the risk of taking her to the races at Ascot with him. At Ascot, Higgins’ mother learns to her horror what her son intends to do with the poor girl. With all the excitement of watching a horse race, Eliza lapses back into her vulgar jargon. Everyone is shocked apart from Higgins, who is amused. Freddy sends Eliza flowers and wants to meet her. But after the disastrous events at Ascot, she no longer wants to see anyone.

Act II
Six weeks later, Higgins is preparing Eliza for her visit to a royal ball. The reception and the ball turn out to be a great success for Eliza.Pickering congratulates Higgins on winning his bet. Nobody takes any notice of the exhausted Eliza who, realising that ultimately she is the one who has achieved the victory, quarrels with Higgins and throws his slippers at him.

Eliza leaves the house and bumps into Freddy, who has fallen in love with her. Unable to stand Freddy’s indecisiveness, Eliza tries to make contact again with her friends at the flower market. She comes across her father, who has received a bequest from an eccentric American at Higgins’ suggestion. The old villain is unhappy because he is getting married and will have to settle down to a respectable existence. In this new life, there is no longer room for Eliza.

Eliza goes to visit Higgins’ mother, who understands her. There she meets Higgins, too, and the two immediately begin to quarrel again. Their argument culminates with Eliza walking out on Higgins once and for all. Higgins goes home in confusion, realising he misses the strange girl. He has grown accustomed to her face. And then Eliza comes back! Why?

Act I

In Edwardian London, Eliza Doolittle is a Cockney flower girl with a thick, unintelligible accent. The noted phonetician Professor Henry Higgins encounters Eliza at Covent Garden and laments the vulgarity of her dialect ("Why Can't the English?"). Higgins also meets Colonel Pickering, another linguist, and invites him to stay as his houseguest. Eliza and her friends wonder what it would be like to live a comfortable life ("Wouldn't It Be Loverly?").

Eliza's father, Alfred P. Doolittle, stops by the next morning searching for money for a drink ("With a Little Bit of Luck"). Soon after, Eliza comes to Higgins's house, seeking elocution lessons so that she can get a job as an assistant in a florist's shop. Higgins wagers Pickering that, within six months, by teaching Eliza to speak properly, he will enable her to pass for a proper lady.

Eliza becomes part of Higgins's household. Though Higgins sees himself as a kindhearted man who merely cannot get along with women ("I'm an Ordinary Man"), to others he appears self-absorbed and misogynistic. Eliza endures Higgins's tyrannical speech tutoring. Frustrated, she dreams of different ways to kill him ("Just You Wait"). Higgins's servants lament the stressful atmosphere ("The Servants' Chorus").

Just as Higgins is about to give up on her, Eliza suddenly recites one of her diction exercises in perfect upper-class style ("The Rain in Spain"). Though Mrs Pearce, the housekeeper, insists that Eliza go to bed, she declares she is too excited to sleep ("I Could Have Danced All Night").

For her first public tryout, Higgins takes Eliza to his mother's box at Ascot Racecourse ("Ascot Gavotte"). Though Eliza shocks everyone when she forgets herself while watching a race and reverts to foul language, she does capture the heart of Freddy Eynsford-Hill. Freddy calls on Eliza that evening, and he declares that he will wait for her in the street outside Higgins' house ("On the Street Where You Live").

Eliza's final test requires her to pass as a lady at the Embassy Ball. After more weeks of preparation, she is ready. All the ladies and gentlemen at the ball admire her, and the Queen of Transylvania invites her to dance with the prince ("Embassy Waltz"). A Hungarian phonetician, Zoltan Karpathy, attempts to discover Eliza's origins. Higgins allows Karpathy to dance with Eliza.

Act II

The ball is a success; Karpathy has declared Eliza to be a Hungarian princess. Pickering and Higgins revel in their triumph ("You Did It"), failing to pay attention to Eliza. Eliza is insulted at receiving no credit for her success, packing up and leaving the Higgins house. As she leaves she finds Freddy, who begins to tell her how much he loves her, but she tells him that she has heard enough words; if he really loves her, he should show it ("Show Me").

Eliza and Freddy return to Covent Garden but she finds she no longer feels at home there. Her father is there as well, and he tells her that he has received a surprise bequest from an American millionaire, which has raised him to middle-class respectability, and now must marry his lover. Doolittle and his friends have one last spree before the wedding ("Get Me to the Church on Time").

Higgins awakens the next morning. He finds himself out of sorts without Eliza. He wonders why she left after the triumph at the ball and concludes that men (especially himself) are far superior to women ("A Hymn to Him"). Pickering notices the Professor's lack of consideration, and also leaves the Higgins house.

Higgins despondently visits his mother's house, where he finds Eliza. Eliza declares she no longer needs Higgins ("Without You"). As Higgins walks home, he realizes he's grown attached to Eliza ("I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face"). At home, he sentimentally reviews the recording he made the day Eliza first came to him for lessons, hearing his own harsh words. Eliza suddenly appears in his home. In suppressed joy at their reunion, Professor Higgins scoffs and asks, "Eliza, where the devil are my slippers?"

The Vienna Volksoper is a major opera house in Vienna, Austria. It produces three hundred performances of twenty-five German language productions during an annual season which runs from September through June.

Volksoper Vienna was built in 1898 as the Kaiserjubiläum-Stadttheater (Kaiser's Jubilee Civic Theatre), originally producing only plays. Because of the very brief construction period (10 months) the first director Adam Müller-Gutenbrunn had to start with debts of 160,000 gulden. After this inauspicious startup the Kaiserjubiläum-Stadttheater had to declare bankruptcy five years later in 1903.

On 1 September 1903 Rainer Simons took over the house and renamed it the Kaiserjubiläum-Stadttheater - Volksoper (public opera). His intention was to continue the production of plays but also establish series of opera and operetta. The first Viennese performances of Tosca and Salome were given at the Volksoper in 1907 and 1910 respectively. World-famous singers such as Maria Jeritza, Leo Slezak and Richard Tauber appeared there; the conductor Alexander Zemlinsky became the first bandmaster in 1906.

In the years up to and through the First World War the Volksoper attained a position as Vienna's second prestige opera house. In 1919, Felix Weingartner became Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. He was followed as Director by Hugo Gruder-Guntram. After 1929, it focused on light opera, and under Gruder-Guntram undertook a number of summer tours to Abbazia in 1935, Cairo and Alexandria in 1937 and throughout Italy in 1938, with guest appearances from Richard Tauber. After the Second World War, the Vienna Volksoper became the alternative venue to the devastated Vienna State Opera. In 1955 the Volksoper returned to its former role of presenting opera, operetta, and musicals.

From September 1991 to June 1996 the Vienna Volksoper was under a collective leadership with the Vienna State Opera. In 1999 the Volksoper became a 100% subsidiary of the Bundestheater-Holding. Since 1 September 2007 Robert Meyer has headed the Volksoper as artistic director together with the business manager Christoph Ladstätter. Each season includes about 25 productions, a total of approximately 300 performances—a performance almost every day. In addition to opera, operetta, musicals and ballet, there are special performances and children's programs.
