A Celebration of Disney Classics - featuring Alan Menken

Guest of Honor Alan Menken is one of Hollywood's most successful film composers and a true Disney legend.
He wrote melodies that are known worldwide and enchant generations. In 1989 Disney celebrated its glorious return to the great film fairy tale musical with "Ariel, the Mermaid". More important than ever for the animated masterpieces was the music that breathed the soul into the animated fairytale worlds. One name shaped the films of the so-called "Golden 90s" like no other: Alan Menken. In addition to "Ariel, the Mermaid", the composer wrote the soundtrack and songs for the modern Disney classics "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "Pocahontas", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and many more - Disney's dream worlds received through him their unmistakable sound.
Alan Menken is considered one of the leading Hollywood composers: the trained Broadway composer later brought many of his Disney scores to the musical stage with great success. The song "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin" is one of the most successful songs in film history and topped the Billboard charts in the USA for 23 weeks. In addition, both "Aladdin" and previously "Beauty and the Beast" returned to the screen as opulent live-action films with additionally composed songs. Menken is currently working on a live-action film adaptation of "Arielle", which is due to be released soon.
Alan Menken also records records in terms of prizes and awards: He is the only living creative in Hollywood to have received a total of eight Oscars. He also received eleven Grammys and seven Golden Globes as well as many other important awards.
In 2021, a new one will be added to his awards: Alan Menken will receive the "Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award" at the Hollywood Film Music Gala in Vienna.

We look forward to celebrating the magic of the Disney cosmos together with our guest of honor and many top-class performers in the festive setting of the Wiener Konzerthaus. At the podium of the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra, Emmy Prize winner Michael Kosarin, Alan Menken's long-time Music Director, will be standing.

From an artistic point of view, the concert on September 23 corresponds to the gala evening on September 24, 2022; only the festive presentation of the “Max Steiner Awards” will only take place on September 24th.

Venue Info

Vienna Konzerthaus - Vienna
Location   Lothringerstraße 20

The Konzerthaus is a concert hall located in Vienna, Austria, which opened in 1913. It is situated in the third district just at the edge of the first district in Vienna. Since it was founded it has always tried to emphasise both traditional and innovative musical styles.

In 1890, the first ideas for a Haus für Musikfeste (House for music festivals) came about. The idea of the new multi-purpose building was to be more interesting to the broader public than the traditional Vienna Musikverein. In addition to the concert hall, the first drawings by Ludwig Baumann for the Olympion included an ice-skating area and a bicycle club. In an attached open air area, 40,000 visitors would be able to attend events. Although the drawings were not accepted, today an ice skating area is situated right next to the building.

The Konzerthaus was finally built between 1911 and 1913. The architects were Fellner & Helmer; the work was done in cooperation with Ludwig Baumann.

The building is about 70×40 meters and had originally three halls, in which there can be simultaneous concerts, since they are sound-proofed. The original Art Nouveau building was partly destroyed during renovations and adaptions, but the building was reconstructed from original sketches in the 1970s. A historic organ was installed in the Konzerthaus by the Austrian firm Rieger in 1913. Between 1997 and 2000 the house was completely renovated.

  • Großer Saal, with 1,840 seats
  • Mozartsaal, with 704 seats
  • Schubertsaal, with 336 seats
  • Berio Saal was added during the latest renovations and seats up to 400 people

The Konzerthaus has the Vienna Symphony, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Wiener Singakademie and the Klangforum Wien in residence. Several subscriptions also include concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic and other organizations.
