Programme
Joseph Haydn: Stabat Mater, Hob. XXbis
Jan Dismas Zelenka: Miserere in C minor, ZWV 57
Overview

A double bassist in the finest ensemble of his time, the Dresden Orchestra, whose ranks included many illustrious composers and which primarily performed the works of its own musicians, Zelenka disregarded rules and conventions. A tempestuous figure, he helped revolutionize musical forms, as they were insufficient to contain his passion and imagination, and his earthy Miserere deserves to be as well-known as Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. For this concert, in keeping with our festival's theme, we propose to explore Haydn's Stabat Mater. Juxtaposing these works by Haydn and Zelenka highlights how, with his own Stabat Mater, Haydn positioned himself within a Baroque tradition and a lineage that extended to his predecessor Werner, as well as to Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, which was already the "hit" it remains today. By 1768, this work had been regularly performed throughout Europe for several decades. It is said that in Paris, when Haydn's version was first presented, the audience was initially outraged because they wanted to hear Pergolesi. But after the concert, opinions softened, and the new work was lauded to the skies! We have long wished to place Gli Angeli Genève in the expert hands of Václav Luks. A tireless discoverer, editor, and ardent champion of the work of his compatriot Zelenka, he is one of the world's leading specialists in 18th-century repertoire, and his passion and energy promise a truly dazzling performance.

Victoria Hall - Geneva
Location   Rue du Général-Dufour 14

The Victoria Hall is a concert hall in Geneva, Switzerland. It was built in 1891–1894 by the architect John Camoletti and financed by the British consul, Daniel Fitzgerald Packenham Barton, who dedicated it to Queen Victoria and gifted it to the City of Geneva. The hall is mainly used for classical music concerts, but it also hosts performers in song, jazz and world music.

The Victoria Hall was home to a wind band, the Harmonie nautique, before the founding of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande by Ernest Ansermet in 1918, and remained so until 1976 when Harmonie nautique ceased operating. During this period it was also used as a studio for recordings.

Arson caused a disastrous fire on 16 September 1984. Much original artwork was lost, including decorative paintings by Ernest Biéler, as was the massive original pipe organ. The building was then slowly restored, with a new and equally large organ being installed in 1993, and today it is registered on the cantonal list of heritage buildings. But the paintings were replaced by a contemporary work by Dominique Appia.

The main entrance faces east. The auditorium has a parterre and two layers of balconies. The organ dominates the back of the stage.
