Overview

Sacred arias by Giovanni B. Pergolesi and Wolfgang A. Mozart.

Under its new, yet familiar name, the Zurich Opera Orchestra is launching its new concert season. After thirteen years as Philharmonia Zurich, the orchestra is reverting to its original title. The Philharmonic Concerts will once again alternate between the Zurich Opera House and the Tonhalle Zurich.

The seven Philharmonic Concerts will focus on the vast repertoire, from Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms to Edward Elgar, Francis Poulenc, and Sergei Prokofiev. Guest soloists include violinist Renaud Capuçon and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen, violinist James Ehnes, and Swiss soprano Regula Mühlemann. General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda and conductors such as Pablo Heras-Casado, Elim Chan, Daniele Rustioni, Riccardo Minasi, and Tugan Sokhiev will lead the orchestra.

The seven Philharmonic Concerts will feature the orchestra's extensive repertoire, ranging from Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms to Edward Elgar, Francis Poulenc, and Sergei Prokofiev. The in-house period-instrument ensemble La Scintilla welcomes three leading figures in early music: Emmanuelle Haïm, Enrico Onofri, and Stefano Montanari. The new "Zurich Baroque" festival offers several concert highlights before Easter (see p. 158). To conclude the season, Gianandrea Noseda will conduct a large open-air concert on Sechseläutenplatz as part of the "Opera House for All" program.

Venue Info

Tonhalle Zürich - Zurich
Location   Claridenstrasse 7

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
