Overview

The delights of love in the kingdom of Jupiter under the baton of Sébastien Daucé.

New production from the Aix-en-Provence Festival

The libretto of La Calisto by Cavalli is drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, an extraordinary pagan bible in which desire in all its forms presides over the creation of the world. The constellation of the Great Bear was formed by the nymph Calisto when she was transformed into a bear by Juno in a fit of jealousy. Almost a century before Semele by Handel or its close relative Platée by Rameau, La Calisto made its mark as one of the earliest musical settings of the outlandish love affairs of Jupiter, the Don Juan of Mount Olympus. This Calisto is one of the brightest gems of Venetian opera, and is characterized by a blend of genres and situations: tenderness, languor, misunderstandings, debauchery, lust, betrayal, and jealousy. But what if Mount Olympus were a mirror of our own world?

History
Premiere of this production: 28 November 1651, Teatro Sant 'Apollinare, Venice

La Calisto is an opera by Francesco Cavalli from a libretto by Giovanni Faustini based on the mythological story of Callisto. The opera received its first performance on 28 November 1651 at the Teatro Sant 'Apollinare, Venice, where it drew limited audiences for its run of eleven performances. In the twentieth century it was successfully revived. The libretto was published in 1651 by Giuliani and Batti. The story combines two myths: Jupiter's seduction of Calisto, and Diana's adventure with Endymion. The plot is somewhat formulaic: Jane Glover has commented on how the librettist had to invent complications to meet audience expectations in the context of Venetian opera.

Venue Info

Théâtre des Champs-Elysées - Paris
Location   15 Avenue Montaigne

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is an entertainment venue situated near Avenue des Champs-Élysées, from which it takes its name. Its eponymous main hall may seat up to 1,905 people.

Commissioned by impresario Gabriel Astruc, the theatre was built from 1911 to 1913 upon the designs of brothers Auguste Perret and Gustave Perret following a scheme by Henry van de Velde, and became the first example of Art Deco architecture in the city. Less than two months after its inauguration, the Théâtre hosted the world premiere of the Ballets Russes' Rite of Spring, which provoked one of the most famous classical music riots.

At present, the theatre shows about three staged opera productions a year, mostly baroque or chamber works more suited to the modest size of its stage and orchestra pit. It also houses an important concert season. It is the home venue of the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Lamoureux and serves as a French base for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as well.

The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and Ensemble orchestral de Paris play most of their concerts here too, along with other dance, chamber music, recital, and pop events.
