Venue Info

Theatro São Pedro - Sao Paulo
Location   Rua Barra Funda, 171

Theatro São Pedro is an iconic and renowned cultural venue in São Paulo. With its remarkable history and several renovations over the years, the theater hosts plays, operas and concerts, with a prestigious orchestra. Audiences enjoy high-quality shows.

Theatro São Pedro is a centennial house, with one of the richest and most surprising histories in Brazilian music. Opened during a period of cultural blossoming, the theater is inserted both in the tradition of the opera houses created in the late 19th century and early 20th century and in the proliferation of concert halls through different districts of São Paulo. It is the only remnant of that period when culture was seen on the city streets, promoting concerts, gala events, afternoon events, operas and comic operas.

In 100 years, Theatro São Pedro has gone through several phases and reinventions. It has been a movie theater, a theater, and, without fixed corps, welcomed itinerant companies that assembled operas and comic operas. The theater was also the stage, in different phases, for political and cultural resistance, welcoming great names of the Brazilian music, such as Eleazar de Carvalho, Isaac Karabtchevsky, Caio Pagano and Gilberto Tinetti, and also hosted concerts by OSESP.

After going through restructuring, it was reopened in 1998 with a performance of Gioachino Rossini's La Cenerentola. Gradually, the opera gained a prominent position at Theatro São Pedro's calendar and, in 2010, this prominence was confirmed with the creation of the Theatro São Pedro Orchestra. Throughout the years, its opera seasons have bet on diversity, with famous works from the traditional repertoire, rarely executed pieces, as well as operas by Brazilian composers, which makes Theatro São Pedro a reference in the Brazilian operatic scene. Now, Theatro São Pedro is embarking on a new phase, respecting its history and mindful of the new challenges in arts, culture and the society.
