Festival

Beethovenfest Bonn 2019

‘Moonlight’: thus the motto of the 2019 Beethovenfest. What looks at first like a wry allusion to the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ turns out to be fruitful terrain for this year’s programme.

Programme
Overview

These instruments sound like little machines from the laboratory of a brilliant inventor in a steampunk story. The ‘beat machines’ by the Georgian artist Koka Nikoladze are musical instruments and art installations rolled into one. When Nikoladze starts playing them the sounds seem to follow laws all their own. The programme contrasts these wooden boxes with a completely different kind of ‘sound machine’: the world-famous Australian beatboxer Tom Thum, who produces the most unimaginable sounds and rhythms using only his mouth. Together with his fellow Australian, composer-conductor Gordon Hamilton, and a young string ensemble, his beatboxing is guaranteed to raise the pulse of every listener, not only the pupil-managers who prepared and present this concert.

Program

  • ‘Beat Machines‘. New compositions and arrangements for beatboxer or beat machines and strings
