Overview

Carmen as seen by a Scandinavian. Freed from local customs and manners. Transforming the Cigarette Factory into an unspecified industry. Relocating Sevilla. Putting the focus on the universality of the myth.

With the fantastic Compañía Nacional de Danza (Spanish National Dance Company), Swedish choreographer Johan Inger, a resident of Sevilla for many years, presents a new take on Mérimée’s literary character who Bizet transformed into the opera myth. Seen through the eyes of an innocent child. Without losing sight of the high dosage of violence in the drama. A minimalist staging that plays with three materials. Three: the number which breaks the love triangle and amorous equilibrium.

The Compañía Nacional de Danza addresses a sober and timeless choreography which uses contemporary parallels to move the story of Carmen forward to the present day. Will today’s bullfighters be the rock stars of the moment?

Light and darkness for a story of passion and violence in a new perspective of a liberated and modern Carmen.

History
Premiere of this production: 21 February 1949, Shaftesbury Theatre, London

Carmen is a ballet created by Roland Petit and his company 'Les Ballets de Paris' at the Prince's Theatre in London on 21 February 1949, which has entered the repertory of ballet companies in France and around the world. This version is in five scenes and represents a striking admixture of classical ballet, Spanish-style movement, mime, and freshly invented dramatic dance action. It opened "scandalously and brilliantly, with the fabulously sexy Zizi Jeanmaire in the title role" in London and has been regularly performed ever since.

Synopsis

The first scene is set in a street in Seville, where the dancing of a crowd is interrupted by a girl being chased by Carmen. Their fight is only stopped by the arrival of Don José, who assists Carmen's defeated opponent. As he is about to arrest Carmen he is struck by her allure and arranges an assignation for later. That evening in the tavern Don José enters and dances a zapateado to the music of the habanera. Carmen next appears and dances, ending at Don José's feet; he lifts her up and they go up to the bedroom. The customers dance and when Carmen and Don José return they join in before José wraps Carmen in his cape and they go off.

The third scene is in Carmen's bedroom. After a passionate duet, three of Carmen's friends come in and invite her to go outside. At night in the street, Carmen, Don José and the friends prepare to rob a passer-by. Using a dagger Carmen has given him, Don José stabs a man, and after the women have taken his purse, they all flee.

The final scene is set outside the bull-ring where girls await the arrival of their hero, the toreador. He enters and greets them but is fascinated by the indifference shown by Carmen. José enters and notices their looks. The toreador moves into the arena whereupon Don José threatens Carmen, and in a fight to the death he overcomes her. As she dies, hats are tossed from the bull-ring to land at his feet.

Venue Info

Teatro de la Maestranza - Seville
Location   Paseo de Cristóbal Colón, 22

The Teatro de la Maestranza was inaugurated on May 2, 1991. The work of architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín, its location on a privileged site of historical Sevilla, its exceptional technical features along with the quality and variety of its programming, makes the theatre one of the most prominent stage settings in Europe.

The theatre was conceived to be one of the main cultural venues of the Seville Expo '92, and the first performance took place in 1991, shortly before the inauguration of the Universal Exposition.

Although the Teatro de la Maestranza is mainly devoted to opera, there are also performances of Zarzuela (Spanish operetta) and other musical performances.

The resident orchestra is the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra (ROSS), and the artistic director is Pedro Halffter. The theatre is the ROSS' main concert venue and the home of the Choir of the Friends' Society of the Maestranza Theatre.

In spite of the 153 operas whose stories take place in Sevilla, the city did not have adequate installations to stage such complex events. In 1985 the Diputación Provincial de Sevilla, which owned the public plot of land of a former military barracks -Maestranza de Artillería-, put out a call for tenders to construct a covered polyvalent auditorium. Architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín were chosen to carry out the project.

The building began on February 10, 1987. However in mid-1988, and with the approaching date of The World’s Fair in Sevilla -Expo’92-, the project was adopted as the need for a performance space to accommodate opera and large scale symphonic programs became a priority.

Queen Sofía of Spain opened the theatre on May 2, 1991. In the years that followed, tens of thousands made the theatre their own. There was a renewed interest in opera, classical music, and ballet with Season tickets subscriptions and sold-out Box Office events. In this way, today’s audience remains the theatre’s most staunch supporter. The consolidation of the Maestranza as a beacon of culture at both a local and global level resulted in a renovation during the years 2005 to 2007. The performance area was extended and with this new space, the structures and technical features were aligned with the production needs of any major theatre.

The importance of the Teatro de la Maestranza in reactivating stage and musical events in Sevilla, a city that has played a key role in the history of opera and has been fundamental in the development of flamenco was recognized by UNESCO: in 2006. Sevilla was the first city in the world to be awarded the title of “City of Music”.
