About

Born in Moscow in 1997, Stefan Astakhov started out studying violin, cello and piano. After switching to voice in 2015, he enrolled at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, where he studied with Caroline Thomas. As of recently, the young baritone is also studying with Bogdan Makal and has taken part in masterclasses with José van Dam, among others.

Astakhov made his operatic debut as John Styx in Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers at the Landestheater in Detmold in 2017. He has also sung Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Wrocław Opera (also known as the Breslauer Opernhaus), Bosun in Britten’s Billy Budd at the National Theatre in Prague and Fiorello in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Austrian summer festival jOpera in Jennersdorf.

He won the Young Talent Award at the 2018 International Vocal Competition in ’s-Hertogenbosch. In 2019 he won the Mirjam Helin Singing Competition in Helsinki. Astakhov will be making his first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 2019–20 season.
