Festival

Beethovenfest Bonn 2019

‘Moonlight’: thus the motto of the 2019 Beethovenfest. What looks at first like a wry allusion to the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ turns out to be fruitful terrain for this year’s programme.

Programme
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: First movement from Serenade no. 13 in G major, KV 525 ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’) (1787)
Francis Poulenc: Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant
Camille Saint-Saëns: Carnival of the Animals
Johann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 in G major, BWV1048
Frédéric Chopin: Piano Concerto no. 2 in F minor, Op.21
Dmitri Shostakovich: Chamber Symphony in C minor, op. 110a (1960)
Ludwig van Beethoven: Third movement from String Quartet no. 16 in F major, op. 135 (1826)
Overview

The German String Philharmonic will offer a broad and entertaining musical panorama on its little tour through the Rhine-Sieg district. Mozart’s legendary ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’ will rub shoulders with an unusual scoring of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Third Brandenburg Concerto. The brilliant Piano Concerto in F minor by the 19-year-old Frédéric Chopin, written while he was still living in Warsaw, is joined by the slow set of variations from Beethoven’s final string quartet, headed ‘Sweet quiet song or hymn of peace’ on a page of sketches. Finally comes the popular orchestral version of Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet, one of the most personal and harrowing works by this Russian composer.
