Festival

Beethovenfest Bonn 2021

No poet could resist the silvery glow of the earth’s satellite, still less any composer. It transforms the shape of our world. ‘Moonlight’ is a romantic theme par excellence. It was made to order for the new subjectivity of experience that emerged around the year 1800 and led, in the course of the 19th century, to ever-deeper probes of pleasure and pain in feeling and orchestral colour.

Programme
Campus Project 2020
Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata no. 13 in E flat major "quasi una fantasia", Op.27 no.1
György Kurtág: ...quasi una fantasia..., Op.27 no.1
Milica Djordjević: New Work
Karlheinz Stockhausen: Gruppen (Groups) for three orchestras (1955–57)
Overview

Works by Ludwig van Beethoven, György Kurtág, Zeynep Gedizlioğlu and Karlheinz Stockhausen

The ‘Campus’ youth exchange project is also celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2020 and invites young people from all over the world to the Rhine to work out a challenging programme together with the musicians of the Federal Youth Orchestra of Germany. Three orchestral groups play Karlheinz Stockhausen’s monumental spatial composition ‘Gruppen’. Deeply impressed György Kurtág described this work as a benchmark composition for the entire music of the 20th century.

Kurtág reacted to this with his own spatial composition: ‘...quasi una fantasia...’, an orchestral piece that refers to Beethoven’s Opus 27. Together with Beethoven's original and a new creation by the Turkish composer Zeynep Gedizlioğlu the Campus Project Orchestra forms an impressive musical experience from the complex scores.

Venue Info

Staatenhaus Köln - Cologne
Location   Rheinparkweg 1

The Rheinparkhallen directly on the right bank of the Rhine in Cologne date from the 1920s and adjoin the former Rheinhallen of the Cologne Trade Fair to the north. Two years after the exhibition opened in 1924, building director Adolf Abel was commissioned with expansion plans. At the major event "Pressa 1928", additional space was to be created in which the participating countries could present themselves. The building in the immediate vicinity of the Rhine was given the name “Staathaus”. The semicircular building was almost completely destroyed in the war and rebuilt in the 1950s.

The imposing, now listed building opposite the Tanzbrunnen offers a fascinating setting for top-class opera performances. Among other things, at the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's "SONNTAG" from "LICHT" in spring 2011 (staged by Carlus Padrissa), the Cologne Opera was able to record a great artistic success at this venue.
It has three venues: States House Hall 1 (approx. 850 seats), States House Hall 2 (approx. 800 seats) and States House Hall 3 (approx. 200 seats). Both opera and children's opera performances take place here.
