About
Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio (with varying titles) has had no less than three world premières.
The first version was performed for the first time in 1805 at the Theater an der Wien, the second around a year later, and the third in 1814 at the Court Opera at Kärntnertor Theatre in a version that has been performed from day one at the opera house on the Ring. The very first version of the work is now also being premièred at the Staatsoper, offering audiences the rare and exceptional opportunity to experience two different versions of the opera in one season. Doing so provides direct insight into the development of Fidelio. Beethoven’s revisions comprise not just formal changes: Fidelio underwent extensive revision both of the music and the libretto.
