From the purity of Swan Lake to the gorgeous virtuosity of La Bayadère to the deep affection of Giselle, the three classics have their own characteristics, but together they demonstrate the profound understanding and pursuit of excellence of the Russian Moscow Classical Ballet in ballet art. The three consecutive days of performances allow you to appreciate the diverse charm of ballet art and feel the romance and passion from Russia at one time.

The New Year's ballet feast of the Moscow Classical Ballet of Russia is not only an ultimate visual and auditory enjoyment, but also a baptism and sublimation of the soul. Let's meet at the theater and witness the glorious moment of ballet art together!

Since its founding in 1995 by dance master Safonova Irina, who served as artistic director, the Moscow Classical Ballet Theater has always been committed to the inheritance and development of the Russian classical ballet tradition. The current director Galina Salimova leads the company forward with her outstanding leadership. The members of the company are all from Russia's top dance schools, with superb skills and talents.

Over the years, the ballet company has been like a shining star, illuminating the growth path of countless new dance stars. Many graduates have shone on bigger stages and become the mainstay of major ballet theaters. With its excellent performance quality, the company quickly gained a foothold in the European market, won wide media attention and industry praise, and toured all over Europe, becoming a bridge connecting the ballet culture of the East and the West.

It is worth mentioning that every New Year, the company will carefully prepare up to six classic ballets and launch a grand tour in Europe, with more than 100 performances, bringing the audience a feast of both vision and soul. This is not only a tribute to traditional ballet art, but also a powerful impetus for the development of ballet art in the new era.

The Moscow Classical Ballet Theatre of Russia often performs the most popular ballets, including the three most famous Tchaikovsky ballets, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty, as well as Giselle, Don Quixote, Coppelia, La Sylphide, La Bayadère, Romeo and Juliet, and La Sylphide. In 2024, they will tour China with six ballets, led by the troupe leader Galina Salimova, and will present the troupe's most popular ballets, Swan Lake, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadère, Romeo and Juliet, and La Sylphide.

The Nutcracker (Balet-feyeriya) is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Op. 71). The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King".

Synopsis

Plot 

Below is a synopsis based on the original 1892 libretto by Marius Petipa. The story varies from production to production, though most follow the basic outline. The names of the characters also vary. In the original E. T. A. Hoffmann story, the young heroine is called Marie Stahlbaum and Clara (Klärchen) is her doll's name. In the adaptation by Dumas on which Petipa based his libretto, her name is Marie Silberhaus. In still other productions, such as Baryshnikov's, Clara is Clara Stahlbaum rather than Clara Silberhaus.

Act I

Scene 1: The Stahlbaum Home

It is Christmas Eve. Family and friends have gathered in the parlor to decorate the beautiful Christmas tree in preparation for the party. Once the tree is finished, the children are sent for. They stand in awe of the tree sparkling with candles and decorations.

The party begins. A march is played. Presents are given out to the children. Suddenly, as the owl-topped grandmother clock strikes eight, a mysterious figure enters the room. It is Drosselmeyer, a local councilman, magician, and Clara's godfather. He is also a talented toymaker who has brought with him gifts for the children, including four lifelike dolls who dance to the delight of all. He then has them put away for safekeeping.

Clara and Fritz are sad to see the dolls being taken away, but Drosselmeyer has yet another toy for them: a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. The other children ignore it, but Clara immediately takes a liking to it. Fritz, however, breaks it, and Clara is heartbroken.

During the night, after everyone else has gone to bed, Clara returns to the parlor to check on her beloved nutcracker. As she reaches the little bed, the clock strikes midnight and she looks up to see Drosselmeyer perched atop it. Suddenly, mice begin to fill the room and the Christmas tree begins to grow to dizzying heights. The nutcracker also grows to life size. Clara finds herself in the midst of a battle between an army of gingerbread soldiers and the mice, led by their king. They begin to eat the soldiers.

The nutcracker appears to lead the soldiers, who are joined by tin soldiers, and by dolls who serve as doctors to carry away the wounded. As the Mouse King advances on the still-wounded nutcracker, Clara throws her slipper at him, distracting him long enough for the nutcracker to stab him.

Scene 2: A Pine Forest

The mice retreat and the nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince. He leads Clara through the moonlit night to a pine forest in which the snowflakes dance around them, beckoning them on to his kingdom as the first act ends.

Act II

Scene 1: The Land of Sweets

Clara and the Prince travel to the beautiful Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Prince's place until his return. He recounts for her how he had been saved from the Mouse King by Clara and transformed back into himself. In honor of the young heroine, a celebration of sweets from around the world is produced: chocolate from Spain, coffee from Arabia, tea from China, and candy canes from Russia all dance for their amusement; Danish shepherdesses perform on their flutes; Mother Ginger has her children, the Polichinelles, emerge from under her enormous hoop skirt to dance; a string of beautiful flowers perform a waltz. To conclude the night, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform a dance.

A final waltz is performed by all the sweets, after which the Sugar Plum Fairy ushers Clara and the Prince down from their throne. He bows to her, she kisses Clara goodbye, and leads them to a reindeer drawn sleigh. It takes off as they wave goodbye to all the subjects who wave back.

In the original libretto, the ballet's apotheosis "represents a large beehive with flying bees, closely guarding their riches". Just like Swan Lake, there have been various alternative endings created in productions subsequent to the original.

The Shanghai Oriental Art Center is one of the leading performance and cultural facilities in Shanghai. The five interconnected hemispherical halls or "petals" are shaped to resemble a butterfly orchid from above. They comprise the Entrance Hall, the Concert Hall, the Opera Hall, the Performance Hall, and the Exhibition Hall. The high-tech ceiling changes color during the night to reflect the nature of the performances inside. Located off Century Avenue in Pudong, the SHOAC was opened with a New Year's Eve concert in 2004 and officially opened on July 1, 2005.

Various cultural and musical performances are held in the center, beginning from the 2005 Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Shanghai Concert. It's a regular venue for concert performances and its popular "Chinese Traditional Opera Series" hosts performances by the China National Opera, the Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company and Shanghai Kunqu Company, and the Shanghai Yueju Opera Troupe. The OAC's Saturday Brunch Concerts claim audiences of over 100 000 every year.

The building was designed by French architect Paul Andreu and the Huadong Architectural Design & Research Institute. The façades are mainly laminated glass incorporating perforated metal sheets. The dark granite floors and multi-layered glass screen walls aim to create a softly diffused forest floor effect. The separate "petals" of the construction are hung with large distinctly colored pebbles to differentiate them. The backstage facilities include an Orchestra Rehearsal Hall, Choir Rehearsal Hall, Dance Rehearsal Hall, and Integrated Rehearsal Hall.

Concert Hall
The Concert Hall has 1953 seats, a computer-controlled elevating stage, and an 88-diapason 5-layer organ by Austria's Rieger Pipe Organ. It houses 2 VIP and 7 regular dressing rooms.

Opera Hall
The Opera Hall has 1015 seats, divided into three areas and designed to recreate the intimate experience of Italian opera houses. The orchestra pit is 120 m2 and able to accommodate up to 100 musicians. The central stage provides computer-controlled side, ice, and ballet platforms in addition to the main large-scale platform. It houses 2 VIP and 15 common dressing rooms.

Performance Hall
The Performance Hall has 333 seats and is modeled on semicircular Roman theaters. Its performance floor is golden Swiss pearwood. It has 4 dressing rooms.

Exhibition Hall
The Exhibition Hall is located on the second floor of its petal of the Oriental Art Center. It covers 250 m2 and has 9.8-meter  high walls.

Other facilities
The venue also features ancillary public facilities, including the 100-seat Paris Shanghai French restaurant open daily for lunch and dinner, the 530-square-meter (5,700 sq ft) Café Salon Etoile and an adjacent gift store, and 11 piano training classrooms. The Shanghai Gallery of Antique Music Boxes and Automata is located at the SHOAC, displaying over 200 antique music boxes and European automata, including the oldest extant music box in the world, constructed in 1796 by Antoine Favre-Salomon.
