"Dou Nan" is one of the most famous representative works directed by Japan's national treasure master Bando Tamasaburo for the world's top Taiko orchestra Kodo.

"Da Nan" means "man playing drums", showing Kodo's endless exploration of the possibilities of pure drum music. In September 2009, this work premiered at the Setagaya Public Theater in Tokyo and received rave reviews. It was later performed in Paris, Spain, France and other places with great success. It was then performed in Hong Kong, China in October 2015, which was the first time "Da Nan" was performed in Asia outside of Japan.

The 2024 performance of "Da Nan" will be the first tour of the work in mainland China. Mr. Bando Tamasaburo will also stage a new stage for the tour. The performance of "Da Nan" is unpretentious and simple. Muscles stretch and relax at high speed, blood rushes, and shouts burst out at will - the all-male drummers push their physical strength, technology, and emotional mind to the limit, presenting the essence and new look of Japanese Taiko drum performance, interweaving delicate and varied rich timbre between thunder and silence, which cleanses the audience's mind.

Kodo

Taiko is a traditional Japanese drum with infinite rhythmic possibilities. Kodo is committed to exploring these possibilities and in the process opening up new horizons for this vibrant art form. In 1971, a group of young people, full of vigor and vitality, resolutely left the bustling city and came to Sado Island in the Sea of ​​Japan to perform and study traditional Japanese Taiko. "Kodo" is the Japanese sound of the heart beating, which is the first sound a fetus hears in the mother's womb, which is the original source of all rhythms. Another meaning of "Kodo" is "drum child", and "Tong" means innocent, that is, beating the drum with an innocent heart, which shocks people. It expresses Kodo's desire to play the drum with a pure childlike heart.

Since its debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo has performed over 7,000 times in more than 50 countries and regions across five continents, including 4,000 performances under the theme One Earth. This reflects Kodo's desire to transcend language and cultural boundaries, while also expressing the idea that as human beings we share a common emotional bond. In addition, Kodo has worked with thousands of schoolchildren in Japan through its Exchange School Performances. Kodo is also involved in a wide range of other projects and activities, including headlining performances at major international festivals, composing film scores, and collaborating with many world-class artists around the world.

In 2002, Kodo composed the music for the World Cup theme song "Football Anthem" and performed it live at the World Cup concert. In 2003, Kodo received worldwide acclaim for its soundtrack for Zhang Yimou's film "Hero", and attracted more attention in film soundtracks. Kodo has become a national treasure-level representative group playing Taiko in Japan. Kodo collaborated with virtual idol Hatsune Miku to hold the "Hatsune Miku × Kodo" concert, which was part of NHK's "This is Nippon Premium Theater" series to cheer for the Tokyo Olympics. In 2019, Kodo participated in the opening ceremony of the "2019 Rugby World Cup Japan" and the opening event of the National Stadium. Recently, Kodo has also been invited to participate in the music performance and recording of the popular online game "Genshin Impact", and cooperated with the Yomiuri Giants, further expanding their scope of activities. In 2023, they received the Minister-General's Award of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

In July 2019, Kodo performed Spiral, directed by Kabuki master Bando Tamasaburo, in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, which received numerous acclaims and high praise. In September 2023, Kodo performed Warabe, a 40th anniversary work, in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
