Programme
Overview

The Philharmonic Light Music Orchestra has carefully selected the most popular performance repertoires for 2024, from classic melodies to modern masterpieces, from Western classical to Eastern style, each of which carries the memories and touches of countless listeners. In this performance, you will have the opportunity to listen to those melodies that make your heart surge and your eyes brimming with tears again, and feel the endless charm of music. What is even more exciting is the countdown before the New Year's bell rings. As the audience counts down, the New Year's bell rings, and the shock and touch of that moment will become an unforgettable memory in your life. This countdown of thousands of people is a farewell to the past year, and an expectation for unlimited possibilities in the future.

This is a journey through time. The Philharmonic Light Music Orchestra uses music as a boat and selects the most touching repertoire of the year to lead you through the magnificent opening of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" and indulge in the beautiful dream of Strauss's "The Blue Danube". From the romantic elegance of Shostakovich's "Waltz No. 2" to the vitality of "Waltz of Spring Voices", it awakens the most gentle spring in your heart and lets love bloom quietly in the melody.

The depth of The Phantom of the Opera and the splendor of La La Land outline the trajectory of love in the interweaving of light and shadow. When the melody of Love of My Life sounded, it seemed as if the whole world stood still, leaving only two hearts slowly approaching each other between the notes. The oath of My Heart Will Go On became more firm in the New Year's Eve bell, becoming an eternal promise.

The vastness of "Wild Goose" and the joy of "Dance of the Yao Nationality" are like the brightest stars in the night sky, illuminating the unique charm of Chinese culture and warming every corner of the world. The dreamy melodies of "Castle in the Sky" and "Spirited Away" transcend the boundaries of language and culture, allowing every heart to find resonance and belonging between the notes. The most popular "Tomorrow" and "Goodbye, Distant Departure" from the original contemporary classical style album of the Philharmonic Light Music Orchestra will also be performed live.

At the concert, a young voice singing "The Lone Warrior" expressed a wish that many people would not easily express. In a concert in 2022, when the orchestra returned to the stage, they asked, "What else do you want to hear?" A child shouted out, "The Lone Warrior." The audience burst into laughter, and everyone thought that the matter was over with the music of "Summer." Then, the melody of "Love You Walking Alone in the Dark Alley" played by the clarinetist broke the original direction of the music, and the whole band slowly and smoothly transitioned to another song - the melody of "The Lone Warrior" resounded throughout the theater.

The musicians and the children completed a "two-way run" and fulfilled the children's wishes. Countless people admired the children's courage and were healed by the superb skills of the Philharmonic Light Music Orchestra. The encore video also became popular on the Internet, reported by dozens of media such as CCTV News and China Daily, and was included in the "Farewell to 2022" short video by the People's Daily, with the text "There are always some beautiful things worth our full efforts", which received more than 3 million likes from netizens. In the spring of 2023, Tencent Music joined hands with Qian Lei, the composer and producer of "The Lone Brave", and his team Warrior Music, and invited the heartwarming Philharmonic Light Music Orchestra to jointly bring the chamber music "The Lone Brave" Dream Version. Music is the magic that makes dreams come true, and it continues to write a heartwarming story this spring.

Venue Info

Shanghai Oriental Art Center - Shanghai
Location   425 Dingxiang Lu, near Century Blvd

The Shanghai Oriental Art Center is one of the leading performance and cultural facilities in Shanghai. The five interconnected hemispherical halls or "petals" are shaped to resemble a butterfly orchid from above. They comprise the Entrance Hall, the Concert Hall, the Opera Hall, the Performance Hall, and the Exhibition Hall. The high-tech ceiling changes color during the night to reflect the nature of the performances inside. Located off Century Avenue in Pudong, the SHOAC was opened with a New Year's Eve concert in 2004 and officially opened on July 1, 2005.

Various cultural and musical performances are held in the center, beginning from the 2005 Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Shanghai Concert. It's a regular venue for concert performances and its popular "Chinese Traditional Opera Series" hosts performances by the China National Opera, the Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company and Shanghai Kunqu Company, and the Shanghai Yueju Opera Troupe. The OAC's Saturday Brunch Concerts claim audiences of over 100 000 every year.

The building was designed by French architect Paul Andreu and the Huadong Architectural Design & Research Institute. The façades are mainly laminated glass incorporating perforated metal sheets. The dark granite floors and multi-layered glass screen walls aim to create a softly diffused forest floor effect. The separate "petals" of the construction are hung with large distinctly colored pebbles to differentiate them. The backstage facilities include an Orchestra Rehearsal Hall, Choir Rehearsal Hall, Dance Rehearsal Hall, and Integrated Rehearsal Hall.

Concert Hall
The Concert Hall has 1953 seats, a computer-controlled elevating stage, and an 88-diapason 5-layer organ by Austria's Rieger Pipe Organ. It houses 2 VIP and 7 regular dressing rooms.

Opera Hall
The Opera Hall has 1015 seats, divided into three areas and designed to recreate the intimate experience of Italian opera houses. The orchestra pit is 120 m2 and able to accommodate up to 100 musicians. The central stage provides computer-controlled side, ice, and ballet platforms in addition to the main large-scale platform. It houses 2 VIP and 15 common dressing rooms.

Performance Hall
The Performance Hall has 333 seats and is modeled on semicircular Roman theaters. Its performance floor is golden Swiss pearwood. It has 4 dressing rooms.

Exhibition Hall
The Exhibition Hall is located on the second floor of its petal of the Oriental Art Center. It covers 250 m2 and has 9.8-meter  high walls.
