About
Sara Erde began studying dance at the age of six with Tina Ramirez at Ballet Hispanico in New York City. After graduating as a theatre major from The High School of Performing Arts, she attended the British American Drama Academy at Oxford University, and Mannes College of Music.
Erde has been performing for most of her life as a dancer, actress, and singer in theatres around the world, in film, and on television.
A specialist in Gypsy-style flamenco, Erde has danced extensively in Seville, Spain. She was the first foreigner ever to perform as a soloist at the renowned tablao flamenco Los Gallos, and has appeared in flamenco festivals throughout Andalucía. In Seville, she founded her own dance company, Abolengo, which was produced by Dodger Stage Holding.
Since 1996, Erde has been a solo and corps dancer with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. At the Met, she has appeared in productions of Carmen, la Traviata, Mazeppa, Rusalka, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, among others. She assisted acclaimed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon in creating the dances for Richard Eyre’s new Carmen, in which she performs as both a dancer, and actress, in the role of Manuelita. She has danced with the Met on tours in Japan, appeared in the company's PBS version of Carmen, and in the HD broadcasts of the Opening Night Gala of the 125th Anniversary Season with Renée Fleming, and Carmen.
As an actress, Erde has starred in many notable off-Broadway productions including Mary Zimmerman’s Arabian Nights (Manhattan Theatre Club), David Esbjornson’s Another Part of the House, Carey Perloff’s Don Juan of Seville (Classic Stage Company), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Blood Wedding (The Public Theater), and Martha Clarke and Alfred Uhry’s Angel Reapers (American Dance Festival). Most recently she was a principal dancer and dance captain for Zorro The Musical (Alliance Theatre).
Erde sings lead vocals, writes music, and choreographs for the NYC based Flamenco Funk band Caramelo, whose critically acclaimed debut CD Ride was released in the summer of 2012. She can be heard as a back-up vocalist on Neneh Cherry’s Virgin Records CD Raw Like Sushi, and on bass-baritone Erwin Schrott’s Sony Classics CD, Rojotango.
