Overview
Step into a musical jukebox of global folk traditions—from American spirituals and Caribbean rhythms to Indian raag and Eastern European dances. Featuring works by Still, Ligeti, Coleman and the London premiere of Nneka Cummins’s bold new wind quintet, this concert celebrates the vibrant roots of classical music.Embark on a transcendent musical voyage where the timeless traditions of folk music converge with the refined textures of a wind quintet. The evening opens with William Grant Still’s soulful homage to American spirituals, before György Ligeti’s inventive lines carve a haunting modern soundscape. Lina Mathon-Blanchet’s Haitian folk-inspired dances pulse with life, and Valerie Coleman’s evocative compositions weave a tapestry of African-American heritage. Reena Esmail blends the intricate modes of Indian raag with Western harmony, while Carlos Simon and Victor Agudelo infuse South American melodies and rhythms. Paquito d’Rivera’s spirited Latin jazz adds playful verve, culminating in the London premiere of Nneka Cummins’s The Return—a bold new quintet in which each artist presents a folk song drawn from their own heritage. Under warm, inviting tones, this concert celebrates the enduring power and versatility of the wind quintet.
