Philippe Sly was born in Canada and graduated from Montreal’s McGill University. He won first prize at the prestigious Concours Musical International de Montréal and triumphed at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. He received the Concert of the Year award for romantic, postromantic and impressionist music at the 16th Opus Prize Gala in Québec. During the 2011 / 2012 season, he was a member of the Canadian Opera Company of Toronto.

The following summer, he took part in the Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival where he made his debut in Peter von Winter’s Das Labyrinth under the direction of Ivor Bolton. He then joined the San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellowship Programme, where he performed the roles of Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Bartolo in The Barber of Seville, Ormonte in Partenope and Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro. He made his French debut at the Opéra Comique in Philippe Boesmans’ Au monde and then appeared at the Hamburg Staatsoper in a stage version of the Saint Matthew Passion directed by Romeo Castellucci.
In 2016, he sang in Béatrice et Bénédict (Claudio) at the Glyndebourne Festival and he performed the role of Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande) in Montreal. In 2017, he made his Paris Opera debut in Così fan tutte and his Aix Festival debut in the title role of Don Giovanni. Philippe Sly has appeared in concert as a guest soloist for numerous orchestras. Most notably, he sang Narbal from Les Troyens with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of John Nelson, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor and Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Seguin, La Damnation de Faust and Honegger’s L’Aiglon with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kent Nagano, and Fauré’s Requiem with the Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra and Alain Altinoglu.
