Leipzig Bach Fest 2020

The 2020 Bachfest Leipzig had to be cancelled because of the COVID 19 pandemic. On four days, that would have been the starting and closing weekends, the artistic director of the Bachfest, Prof. Dr. Michael Maul, together with the Leipzig Bach churches and with sponsors, invites you to a concert marathon. Mainly freelance artists will present a varied, innovative and interactive programme, that starts every day (apart from day 1) at 4.00 pm and will be streamed all over the world live from St. Thomas’ and St. Nicholas’ Church. The "Bach Marathon" will reach its peak in the performance of a never before heard version of the Mass in B minor that will dissolve borders between artists and audience.

Venue Info

Paulinum – Aula und Universitätskirche St. Pauli - Leipzig
Location   Neues Augusteum

The Paulinum – auditorium and University Church St. Pauli, is a building of the University of Leipzig on Augustus square.

The building was built between 2007 and 2017 according to plans by the Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat at the site where the Pauline church was blown up on 30 May 1968.  The Paulinum as its own university building unites under its roof both scientific institutes and the University Church. The auditorium can be separated by a transparent room divider (glass wall).

The completion of the building was originally planned for the anniversary year of the University in 2009, but until then was only partially realized. At the 600-year celebration in December 2009, only the bodywork was ultimately accessible. Up to the close of construction in 2017, the cost of the new building rose to a total of 117 million euros and thus doubled compared to the original planning. The adjoining Augusteum has been in use since the summer semester 2012. The official inauguration of Paulinum took place in a three-day ceremony from December 1 to 3, 2017 on the occasion of the 608th anniversary of Paul's death.  Anniversary of the University of Leipzig.
