About

The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (Oslo Filharmoniske Orkester) is Norway's best-known symphony orchestra. The orchestra has its home base in the Oslo Concertgebouw (Oslo Konserthus). As of the 2006-2007 season, the chief conductor is the Finnish Jukka-Pekka Saraste, who is the fifteenth conductor who holds this post. The orchestra has 107 musicians.

The orchestra was founded in 1919 and was initially called Filharmonisk Selskabs Orkester. In 1979 it got its current name. The orchestra originated in 1919 from the Kristiania Music Association (Kristiania Musikerforening), of which the composer Edvard Grieg was one of the founders in 1879. Kristiania was the name of Oslo at the time.

From 1979 to 2002, the Let Mariss Jansons was the orchestra's chief conductor. During this period, the orchestra has received more and more international attention, in particular due to the cycle of recordings with Tchaikovsky's symphonies.
