Programme
Overview

Shepherds play an important part in the Christmas story. They may have been just “simple folk”, but they were the first to hear of the birth of Jesus. Many songs tell their story: how they were lying in the fields when they saw the angel; how they were afraid at first, then overcame their fear; and how they made their way to the stable in Bethlehem, where they found the baby Jesus, and they rejoiced. The shepherds in the Bible represent all mankind. Each and everyone of us can and should identify with them.

The Good Shepherds have become a Christmas tradition here at MuTh. The Vienna Boys’ Choir join with you to celebrate as a family, singing all types of music. This year, together with Chorus Juventus and the Schubert-Akademie, the Vienna Boys’ Choir and their Girls’ Choir recreate the scene at the crib through music, singing the cantata “Uns ist ein Kind geboren” (Unto us a child is born), BWV 142. Although the piece was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, it is probably the work of his predecessor Johann Kuhnau (1660–1722).

And naturally, the audience can join in too: all those who want tocan sing along with Handel’s famous “Hallelujah Chorus” and, of course, “Silent Night”– and turn a concert into a celebration for all.

MuTh - Vienna
Location   Am Augartenspitz 1

The MuTh is the most modern concert and theater hall in Vienna and offers a varied program with top acoustics and comfort with classical and choral music, pop & jazz, electronic music as well as opera and musical theater.

MuTh is the most modern concert hall in Vienna. Having opened in 2012 with an inaugural concert by the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Boys’ Choir, MuTh represents a meeting-point for music and theatre. MuTh promotes classical and avantgarde alike, and always stands for openness and diversity. With comprehensive stage facilities and a configurable orchestra pit, MuTh can function equally well as a theatre and as a concert hall. The theatre stages up to 300 productions a year. These include chamber music, children’s opera, orchestral evenings, dance projects, jazz sessions, performance art, and contemporary music. There are virtually no limits to the potential uses of our flexible space.

The superb acoustic, the intimate atmosphere and the proximity of the audience to the stage make MuTh a favourite for both visitors and artists alike. The sheer width of the auditorium ensures good sightlines to the stage from every one of our large, comfortable seats. A modern ventilation system supplies the theatre with a continuous flow of fresh air from the Augarten outside, and adjusts the air temperature to suit the season.

The concert hall has a modern appearance. Angled edges are much in evidence, and the walls incorporate textured panels which overlap like scales. But these features are not for visual impact alone: designed by Quiring Consultants, this arrangement also ensures a brilliant sound in the hall. Specifically developed for a 400-seat auditorium, the acoustic has a quality and clarity normally heard in smaller-scale concert halls and opera houses, and is greatly appreciated by audience and artists alike.

There is an orchestra shell for the main stage and an acoustic sail on the apron stage. Together, these elements optimise sound projection into the hall, ensuring the audience can clearly hear characters on the stage. Textured panels transmit early reflections from the stage and orchestra pit out into the auditorium, and create a sense of being enveloped by music. The form and construction of the concert hall, combined with the range of materials selected in its design, deliver effective results across a broad acoustic spectrum. Furthermore, the special design and upholstery of the auditorium seating virtually replicates the acoustic profile of the human form, meaning that there is minimal difference between the acoustic properties of an empty seat and one that is occupied.
