The Salzburg tenor Matthäus Schmidlechner recently had big success at his debut at the Salzburg Festival as the 1st Jew in a np of Strauss´Salome and as a student / director deputy in a concert performance of Gottfried von Einem's Der Prozess. This part he will also interpret at his debut at Konzerthaus Wien.

Also praised by the audience and the press was his Mime in Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at the International May Festival at Staatstheater Wiesbaden.

He was also celebrated as Mime at Landestheater Linz, where he also had great successes as Herodes in the np Salome and as Knusperhexe in Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel.

At the opening of the season 2018/19 he gave his successful debut as Melot in Wagner´s Tristan und Isolde at Linz, where he will also give his debut as Aegisth in a new production of Strauss´ Elektra.

Since the 2007/2008 season, Matthäus Schmidlechner has been a soloist at the ensemble of Landestheater Linz, where he presents himself to the audience in numerous striking and great roles as an expressive, versatile and playful singer. Thus f.e., in the field of operetta, as Adam (Der Vogelhändler), Danilo (Die lustige Witwe), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) and Leopold (Im weissen Rössl), and in the area of opera, f.e. as Valzacchi, Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Bardolfo (Falstaff), Le Dancaïre (Carmen) and Prologue / Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw). As a Wagnerian singer, he was very successful in the role of David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and above all as Mime (Der Ring des Nibelungen). His Herodes in Richard Strauss' Salome was also highly successful. He was the title hero in three great, stylistically different musical works of the Baroque and the Modern repertoire: in Rameau´s Platée, Britten´s Albert Herring, and in the premiere of Balduin Sulzer's Kaspar H.

Matthäus Schmidlechner worked with directors such as Olivier Tambosi, David Pountney, Uwe Eric Laufenberg and Anthony Pilavachi, as well as with renowned conductors such as Franz Welser Möst, Dennis Russel Davies and Johannes Wildner.

In addition to the musical theater, the concert is another artistic focus. For example Bach's Passions and Haydn's oratorios, Händel's Messiah as well as Elias by Felix Mendelssohn and the Te Deum by Anton Bruckner belong to his repertoire.

He received his first singing education at the Musikschulwerk Salzburg. He completed his studies at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with William Mason, Thomas Kerbl and Kurt Azesberger in 2009 with excellent success. The final concerto for the study of song and oratorio he contested with the song cycle "Reisebuch aus die Österreichischen Alpen" by Ernst Krenek, which aroused Schmidlechner's interest in the Liedgesang.

He was able to work with Michael Schade, Felicity Lott, Barbara Bonney, Gerhard Kahry and Arthur Korn.
