About
Martin Zehetgruber, born in 1961, studied stage design at the University of music and Performing Arts in Graz. Even during his studies he realized first stage designs, as well as works in the border area of Performance and theatre. He then founded the production Association "MY FRIEND MARTIN"with Martin Kušej.
This was followed by works on houses such as the Staatstheater Stuttgart, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Deutsche Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Volksbühne Berlin, the Kammerspiele and the Residenztheater München as well as the Burgtheater Wien.
In the field of Opera he is working on international houses such as the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, Zurich Opera house, the Bavarian state Opera in Munich, the Staatsoper Berlin, the Salzburg festival and the Teatro Real Madrid, among others, with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Mariss Jansons.
Among the most important work partners among the directors were and are Hans Kresnik, Stephan Kimmig, Jossi Wieler, Guy Joosten and long-term Andrea Breth as well as Martin Kušej, with whom he has been working closely since the beginning.
Martin Zehetgruber is one of the most influential stage designers in the German-speaking world and has received several awards, including the Nestroy award for "best equipment"five times. In 2001, Martin Zehetgruber was appointed Professor of stage design at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart and designed the theater tower for the theatre academy, which was newly founded in Ludwigsburg in 2008.
