Venue Info

Maison du Peuple - Belfort
Location   1 Place de la Résistance

La Maison du Peuple is a performance hall located in the city of Belfort, a French commune located in the northeast of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.

The structure is part of Ma Scène Nationale, the grouping of performance venues in the Pays de Montbéliard.
It also hosts part of the Théâtre Granit's programming, as well as Les Rigolomanies, appreciated for bringing a little freshness and good humor during the summer. The idea of building the Maison du Peuple was first formulated at the trade union level in 1912 but was not taken up until 1922 by the Municipality, which launched an architectural competition for the construction of a Maison du Peuple. avenue Jean Jaurès, on the site of the current Square Lechten.
The project of the Belfort architect Paul Giroud was adopted and the year 1927 saw the work begin. The Maison du Peuple also hosts the municipal library, the labor exchange, the employment office, rooms are provided for musical rehearsals, meetings, and a performance hall.
The whole building is designed according to a reinforced concrete structure that supports the load by beams and posts, allowing large spaces to be cleared. The simplicity of the lines does not exclude a careful decoration of "art deco" tendency which was preserved and enhanced by Robert Gironde, chief architect of the City, during the creation of the large auditorium in 1999. The building was awarded the 20th Century Heritage label in 2004 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
Founded to house popular culture in the 1930s, the People's House of Belfort very quickly became the meeting point for striking workers and the symbol of workers' struggles and social protests.
All the street demonstrations, even today, converge in front of the building. She no longer counts the number of demonstrators gathered at her feet or on these steps.
She has seen all the conflicts, those of Alstom, the old ones as well as the most recent ones, those of Bull or even of May 68. One would almost forget that it was also a place of popular culture with a projection room and exposure.
In recent years, artists have been on this stage:
Eric Antoine, the Orchester d'Harmonie de la Ville de Belfort, Les Ogres de Barback, Didier Barbelivien, The men come from March and the women from Venus, Chantal Ladesou, Laura Laune, Kev Adams, Jarry, Hugues Aufray, Artus, Christophe Alévèque, Jean Marie Bigard
