The Macao Orchestra is a professional ensemble, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government. In September 2008, LÜ Jia started his tenure as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestra, initiating several concert series in each season and presenting to the public, comprehensively and systematically, both Western and Chinese programmes, thereby stimulating the interest of a growing public.
The Orchestra collaborates regularly with numerous internationally renowned musicians, conductors and ensembles including Leonidas Kavakos, Iván Martín, Barry Douglas, Fou Ts’ong, Lang Lang, YUNDI, Sarah Chang, Li-wei Qin, NING Feng, Daniel Oren, The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Latvian National Opera (Latvia), the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Korean Chamber Orchestra, etc. In addition, the Macao Orchestra has been regularly invited to perform in China and overseas, performing in more than 30 cities in China, Portugal, Spain, the U.S.A, etc. The Orchestra successfully presented high quality concerts through its refined performance style and professional level, becoming a symbol of Macao’s prosperity as an international cultural city.
The Macao Orchestra has been committed to organizing activities related to arts education, targeting audiences of different age groups. These educational programmes include the "School Concerts", "University Concerts", "Journey into the World of Music" and "Flourishing Arts", etc., all very popular among students and teenagers.
